Dfw stalwarts labelled as trolls - enough is enough

You are correct! BGs are also not suppose to act as moderators and all we do is report posts/threads to abuse which everyone should do. I have always found abuse to be swift at taking action.I used to think that mse needed moderators, but if I remember correctly Martin once said that having moderators would change the legal status of mse and cause more problems than it would solve. I might stand corrected though.0 -

I did suggest the option of more bg's because there would be a greater chance of one being around at all times, and could always lock threads that have gotten out of hand, as at least that would prevent more unwanted posting while Abuse get the deleting and banning under way.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Sorry, I didn't understand a lot of the OP, who's stalwart
(ah understood though I don't see a point in making such distinctions) simply report them, as simple no? Or walk past them as if they don't exist just as we do in real life. The issue is not with the ones who abuse alone truthfully, but also or more so with those who engage with them - they feed on that sense of inflated self-importance the responses lend them. 0 -

Once i have settled into my new job i would be happy to volunteer as board guide. I have missed being on DFW. The reason i fell off DFW was i thought i was bringing myself down by posting my problems. When in fact i now know it was the opposite. I really had come to a point whereby i could hit the outside world head on instead of hiding behind the curtains. xxxxxxxxxxxxxNight Owl Member No 1 :rotfl: :rotfl:

Hi
Yep, as several have mentioned, obviously there's nothing we can do about people giving wrong or inaccurate advice but please do report any unfriendliness to the abuse team as usual.
The abuse team rarely reply and you're often unlikely to see or notice any action that's been taken because for obvious reasons it can't be mentioned on the boards, but, provided you've received an auto-reply, your report will have been seen and read and it means they can build up a picture of what's going on.

Sorry if I've got this wrong , but I thought the issue was that there were fewer people with enough experience to adequately advise new people. Not necessarily abuse, just given inaccurate advice and then when people with the knowledge ask more detailed questions they are accused of being trolls.Sorry, I didn't understand a lot of the OP, who's stalwart

I hadn't realised this was a side issue of the board being split, but thanks Wol2 for pointing it out.Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

Thanks gilligan for your response, to confess I don't quite know the nature and dynamics of that board and actually posted without understanding the op, actually revisitng am wondering what I'm doing on this thread
I suspect I only meant to say, it didn't matter who offends whom (based on OP title), it's best reported and ignored and not encouraged. It only later occured problem is more so to do with inaccurate advise, preumably some faq's and links to related useful threads would be a good lead rather than depending on member's advice, I don't know. 0 -

Thank you gilligansyle - That's exactly what I was trying to point out.
....the people with the experience and expertise to respond are drifting away from the main DFW board to the diaries sub-board....There are only a few long-standing "stalwarts" left who give a lot of time and effort each day to assist the ever increasing numbers of new posters. Those that remain are not going to continue to stick around if they get branded as Trolls by the less experienced (and I am not just referring to people with low post counts....I include people who don;t have the expertise but because they post regularly on challenges, diaries or chat threads have two stars or more to their name).
When I first joined here, "Troll" meant a particularly nasty type of person who went out to antagonise, abuse and insult. For many long term posters/stalwarts (including me), it still means just that and to my mind the word Troll should be used prudently and with care. If someone posted a statement that we disagreed with or appeared harsh (or even just unfortunately worded), we would comment accordingly...but it didn;t make that person a Troll nor did we immediately go reporting it to Abuse for deletion which is what I saw happen the other week and prompted my original post.
Yes, I completely applaud the tougher stance MSE is taking to protect newbies, particularly on the DFW board. It's a shame however that the word Troll appears to have lost it's original definition and is now being thoughtlessly directed at long term stalwarts by people who clearly don;t understand the meaning of the word and can't be bothered/lack the experience to write a thoughtful reply instead.
It would be a sad day for MSE if we lose the dwindling experience from the DFW board because of the developing dynamics.
