Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Friday 18th September. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning all
Thank you every one for the hugs yesterday, I appreciated them very much.

Curly - hope your daughter feels better soon hon
redruby - I send flowers on Mothers Day and her birthday and send her a book token for Christmas. I have done so every year since she stopped talking to me.
Shellsmithcat - Our Morrisons closes at 2100 so by trial and error we have discovered that around 2010 they start to mark things down. Get there later than about 2025 and you will have missed them all as there are a few hardened bargain spotters that my OH recognises!
rnshon - Honey, at 8 days overdue, I would say chocolate crispie cakes definitely count as cooking! :rotfl:
Penpin - hope you are feeling better today

We had a man from Motability come to visit to talk about what sort of car might be suitable for us. We have been searching for a car that works for me but without much luck. Apparently though there are problems because of our specific needs, and we cannot even have another Touran despite having had one for over 3 1/2 yrs. The car they want us to have costs a lot extra and they are saying we need to find over £2500 towards it, despite us sending in our financial details.
I do not understand this as we do not have anywhere near that sort of money.

My OS-iness was MIA really once the washing was done and out on the line. I didn't even need to sort out food as a friend of my OH was going on holiday today so he gave my OH some bits from out of his fridge that he couldn't fit in his freezer. We therefore ended up having some very delicious gammon steaks with a pineapple glaze for dinner.
Today I will try and be more OS I promise. I am going to make bread pudding for a start and have some darning to do as I ripped one of our sheets. (I just don't know my own strength
) I also want to edge some muslin clothes that I cut into two. I am going to fold them in half again and edge them to make useful sized cloths. I also have to send a card to my nephew even though I have no idea if my mother will allow him to receive it.

Weather was lovely again yesterday - 9 days in a row for my lil part of Devon, though it seems a bit windy out there today.
I hope everyone ends the week happy and content. Warm gentle
for anyone who wants one!

To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

Hi all.
MSD - I hope that one day your Mum will realise what a loving daughter she has. I think you're right to carry on sending to her on her birthday, however upsetting it must be not to have your gifts acknowledged. I hope you manage to get a suitable car soon.
I'm so glad you're having good weather after such a miserable summer. It rained altogether here for about 36 hours but it has cleared up now, and we're just waiting for the temperature to rise a bit. The gardens definitely needed a good soaking, though.
Well, yesterday my electrics were going on and off all day because we were having some more wiring installed, so I couldn't get on the computer for most of the day. Still, we now have more sockets in the right places, which will make living here a lot more efficient. DH and his friends made some brick piers in the room that will be our sitting room - the piers were needed because the floor needs raising to bring it to the same level as the rest of the ground floor, and also because the existing floor is made up of huge 400-year old granite cobbles that will be impossible to move. Next stage in that room is to lay a new wooden floor. The other jobs which got done yesterday were the building of a stud wall in one of the attic rooms and installing electrics in there, so all in all, a very constructive day. I hated all the mess and so on, but DH thinks it was a great day, and he's a happy man! We had to have a marathon cleaning session when the men had gone, but they worked really hard to get so much done.
Dinner tonight is spag bol because I want something easy to do! DH is taking the day off again to do some more work on the house - our friends arrive on Sunday for a week so we need to get a bit more organised.
Anyway, (((hugs))) to all the poorlies and I'll call back later.
Have a good day, everyone.

Good Morning Diva, Mioliere and all who follow. Seems a bit dark still out there at present - the day-length seems to be shortening quite speedily now.
I have a long list of things to do today, just hope my motivation kicks in soon!
It includes a visit to the station to try to work out best ticket for overnight visit to London (I'm on Grandma duty next week for two days). At least the threatened rail strike appears to have been called off. Still, I may lose the will to live if it turns out to be too complicated!
Also need to meal-plan, shop, bake bread, iron, press DH's cardigan pieces so I can start sewing it up and make a net curtain to go in the garage window. Current one was in situ when we moved in (26 years ago!!!!) and will definitely not survive a washing again!
So, that's my plan.
Hope you all have a good day.Resolution:

Good morning, thought I'd drp by after quite a long time lying low. I do like to read up on the daily thread when I've got time, and follow other threads to help me with my pursuit of living Old Style.
I've fallen off the waggon to a small extent, but this year have still managed to have an O.S. wedding, which was great fun, (sneakily that was particularly watching married friends' jaws dropping at the low costs I was working with.) An O.S. holiday (on which I collected sloes, blackberries and some decorative beach stuff for Christmas ideas) Starting back at school, and for the best part of a year now, enjoying my drop in hours, as I continued to cut Friday out of my working week ... without the world coming to an end.
So, hauling myself back on the waggon, thought I'd call by here. I'm having a new log burning stove put in next weekish, and some carport roofing comes today. So I'll be turning to here for money saving ways.
Today breadmaking, paper log making, and a shop for cheap fruit that tastes of the fruit its supposed to be. A quick shake of the sloe gin when my D.S. wakes up, and I can get to it in his wardrobe.
Best wishes to all

Morning :hello:
Topher, congrats on your marriage
Thriftlady, the book is fab - it really is food you can eat every day. Well, I know you can eat any food every day, lol, but it's easy prep that you can do every day so you don't spend hours in the kitchen. First thing I'm going to make is chicken and leek pasties
I LOVE this time of year. I can spend hours in the garden without feeling sick and dizzy from the heat. I've been sweeping, weeding, tidying and picking tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and raspberries.
It's mr tru's day off, so we're going foraging. Again
Next week, I'm making a start on Christmas ornaments made from salt dough. We've got a bamboo plant so I'll attempt a wreath - wish me luckBulletproof0 -
Morning all,
Bit dull and overcast here this morning, hope it might brighten up later. Off to work again today, but at least its friday, and a shorter day for me :T
Kathy, it sounds like your place is coming on, enjoy having your visitors over xx
Tea tonight will be mushroom and onion pasta, with sour cream and garlic bread, think I will get dd to cook it.
Need to have a quick tidy round this morning, OH came home from work yesterday Soooooooo dirty, all I could see was the whites of his eyes, so it was straight in the bath with him, and all his work clothes in the wm, which I hung out overnight, they can stay there for the day now, they are converting a pub into a new MR T in Worthing, Which is Mummysavers old neck of the woods I think.
Ok better get on, have fun all xx0 -
Morning people!
Been so busy this last week and am busy again today!
I need to continue revising for my Oral exam tomorrow, iron, tidy kitchen, put away clothes, make some muffins, appt with Health Trainer at 1pm, get to the post office and then back home to get kiddies and prepare tea (spag bol) think actually I'll stick that in SC this morning. I'm sure there is more I've forgetton to do - Oh well - must get on.
Hope everyone is well - hugs!
Gert xMade it - 15 years married!! Finally!! xx:beer:0 -
Morning all.
Well, today I only have the half day to myself because the kids finish at lunch time. DS will have training and such in the pm, but DD will be back sharrp and totally hyper because she's got a birthday party to go to across the road. The birthday mum has hired a birthday disco bus...think it's a double decker that arrives, parks outside the house and does all the party routine for you. Sounds a laugh and at least I won't have to take here there and back!
I got rid of an estate car full of junk to the Scout car boot sale collection so feel inspired to get up into the attic again today and find some more for them. I've also sold some of the kids Playmobil already to a couple of mums with younger kids that I met at a school event yesterday. I think I'm going to make a big list of all the stuff I have, work out some fair prices via Ebay and put the list up on the school community board, at the nursery end. Most of the Playmobil sets I have still have boxes and instructions, so would make very good Christmas presents.
Menu today is beef in Guinness in the new SC, remains of the cauliflower and potato bake and rice pudding. Have to keep OH sweet as I go out for the whole day tomorrow to my spinning guild meeting. It's only once per month but it always seems to come as a huge surprise to OH that he's on childcare activities that day! I always make the Saturday dinner in advance so it's not like he has to do any cooking or indeed any chores apart from reminding the kids to tidy up their rooms, but he still regards it as a terribly long, hard day....:rolleyes:Val.0 -
Morning All
Topher - congratulations on your wedding :T
I shouldnt really be on here today - I am an os fraud  as nothing remotely OS will be done by me todayhowever OH might.
Am off at lunchtime to london, check in our hotel (DD and myself) then off to Wembley Stadium for Coldplay :j:j. Just in a quandary (sp) about what to wear as guessing it might be a little cold sitting there at 9pm tonight. Will try and eat something before going into the stadium as the prices are just stupid for not very nice food. However will be enjoying the buffet full english on saturday morning.
On another note - DD had her first CC jab last night - luckily the nurses there were brilliant as it took her ages to calm down to have it - she then admitted she didnt feel it at all  I had been telling that for ages but quite obviously she didnt beleive me. Hopefully the next 2 will be easier.
Offski now to check the banking, have a great Friday.

I'm also looking forward to the arrival of this book which has a forward by Hugh's mum. I don't know anything about it, but it looks like my kind of thing.
Hi Topher:wave:Nice to see you, and congratulations on your marriage:beer:
OK, what's today? Friday, good. Strictly Come Dancing on the telly:D DD is looking forward to that, she'll only be watching a bit of it tonight though, too late for her;)
Not much to do today, I've got to buy DS2 a calculator and some sticky backed plastic to cover his exercise books - hate doing that.
Breakfast is porridge and OJ
Lunchboxes have pitta pizzas, grapes and muffins
Supper will be mackerel fillets but I'm not sure how yet.
I picked one of my quinces yesterday evening. Now the kitchen is filled with its smell. A beautiful specimen, golden yellow and without blemish. I think it is a bit early for them but they look and smell ripe and I don't want them dropping on the path and getting bashed so I might pick as many as I can reach. Jelly making next week I think, and quince vodka, stewed quince, baked quince, quince tart....0 -
