The giving up/cutting down alcohol support thread! Part 5

  • Hi Everyone.

Back after a few days absence - had a family do ten days ago, and completely fell on my butt. Suffice to say pretty much made up for nearly two months of abstinence in two days, and made myself bloody ill in the process :(. Couldn't eat properly for days afterwards, had a migraine-level hangover for a week and am still not sleeping properly.

Net result, I went to my GP on Friday, she's taken some bloods and stuff, and is referring me to a counsellor. I've spent too long in denial (even when forswearing the drink, even admitting I have a problem with it, I couldn't bring myself to say the "A" word) - anyway, I've opened up to Mrs Snowy, told her I'm an alcoholic, to which her response was "About bloody time" cos she's known perfectly well for ages but (sensibly) knows that she could say it until she was blue in the face, it was up to me to admit it to myself.

So, I admit it. I'm an alcoholic. I can't drink sensibly or in a controlled manner, so I can't drink, full stop. I'm craving it, but today I'm not going to succumb (besides I'm going back to work today, and at my GP's suggestion I'm going to make an appointment with Occupational Health to put them in the picture.

I feel scared and liberated at the same time. Most of all I'm so glad you lot are here - people that understand and don't judge. That's priceless, and I want to thank all of you, and apologise in advance if I get grouchy about it in the time to come.

    Snowy.

PS - 5 af days for me this month. Many more to come.

Me too, and my life got so much better when I realised I was an alcoholic and started to do something about it.
Admitting it is the first (and a very difficult) step. Well done. Find out what works for you and then stick to it - be it Occupational Health, CBT, AA, Rehab, etc

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :mad::mad:

Have had an ahlcohol related lightbulb moment

Last night managed to drink 3 G&T's in the space of half and hour after thinking to myself at 9.30 one little G&T will be ok, but it wasn't and because I'd told OH I wasn't drinking I sort of did it all secretly and quickly  Sorry to ramble and rant. Lesson being that I obviously can't even have one drink without it turning into something more. Needless to say I feel awful this morning.
Hope everyone else is ok, must rush late for work, catch up properly tonight.

    Mari xx

I could never have just one drink. Sometimes two only (if time was very limited) , but never ever would one drink satisfy me. Every time I had a drink I would invariably want more.
That's my alcoholism - binge drinking, not sticking to targets, hiding my drinking, feeling remorse the next day.
That's why I don't drink any more - I have no control after I take that first drink

Lots of honesty on here today. Well done snowy and mari, do keep posting. I'm glad you feel the thread helps in being non-judgemental but we also like to congratulate all successes too!!

Hope fay isn't having a problem with the fog on her way to concert.

69chick, I'm toying with the idea of 'paying back' any weekday drinking from my weekend drinking nights. If you're only cutting down I expect that's OK. I get cross with myself f I have unplanned driking nights.

Good luck YM, are you planning to stay off booze completely on your days off? And does the healthy eating kick in now as well?

Worried about you at the laundrette yesterday jo, are you having a washing machine crisis? You always seem so snowed under with chores at weekends. Good to know that you have so much energy at the moment, has OH gone to the tip yet?

Sorry, not up for 72hr challenge this week, at least not consecutively. I'll be AF tonight but am having a day out in London with my bestest friend tomorrow. She had a big birthday last month and this is my treat to her so it'll be a show, a gallery, lunch, dinner and a few drinks for us! I'll be back on the wagon later in the week.

    Have a good day everyone.

Well done for asking for some help.:T

I haven't heard anything from my referral yet. I should probably call up to check about it.

I have had a couple of very heavy alcohol fueled days. I'm on my 4th AF day today.

If we are - count me in :D

Well done on reaching your four week milestone AnimatedBravoSmiley.gif
What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.
