  • thriftlady - your posts always make me feel hungry! I thought Amazon had a refund policy that covered the cost of something dropping dramatically, sure there is a thread somewhere on mse about it! btw oh's books were dispatched yesterday, so are winging their way to us now - will review them for you all!

diva - families can be such hard work, I hope that your mum appreciates the flowers.

tru - finger's crossed that the price starts dropping lol! Sorry to hear about your neighbour.

lillibet - enjoy your lamb, must chase mine up - not literally, won't be running round the field! As in previous years my kids have chosen the lucky recipient of a new home (in my freezer) whilst it was gambolling around the field - they didn't give it a name this time, but last year's was called mint sauce! Don't think my kids have any probs with the link between animals and food!

Taplady - enjoy your books, started the new Dan Brown just before I went to work last night, seems good so far!

bitsy - hope the appointment for ds goes well, my dd3 could only say shoes and chocolate for the first few years of her life - what more does a girl need though!

NPM - hope you feel better soon, at least with ds at school you can take things at your own pace for a bit. It's a shame about not being able to chat together over dinner, I remember hearing an interview with someone who had autism and wrote quite a well known book years ago, about how even the smallest of sounds seemed really loud to them, so I can imagine that a knife and fork scraping would drive him mad, can't help but feel that autism should have a lot more money directed at it than it does, but guess that's true of many things! Still at least he eats happily enough if he's on his own, my friend's son has autism and was a real nightmare with food, colours, tastes, textures, all bothered him in various ways, so it was really hard for her just to get him to eat. I'm sure you've probably tried it, but would your ds enjoy a quiet picnic on the carpet with you, or would it be too much out of his routine perhaps, just thinking that there would be no scraping noises. Sometimes you can have too much advice or want to scream at other people's ideas, so apologies in advance if it's a daft suggestion!

Thankfully heating hasn't been necessary here, have probably jinxed it totally now, but weather has been fairly warm since my hols, cold in the mornings though, and since I have a window open for the cats all night, the kitchen can be pretty nippy! I'm always reluctant to put the heating on though, especially during the day, as the back door is always open for the dog. Hmmm, pets have taken over, still the fresh air keeps us healthy - or something! Will hold out as long as poss, jumpers and jeans for the kids, they were pretty good last year about putting on warmer clothes when they realised I really wasn't going to turn the heating on so they could continue to wear t-shirts and shorts! Must get them all some more slippers, as they helped last year, and once more liberate the throws from the girls' rooms and get them back on the sofas for snuggling under! My heating is silly expensive, I have a gas tank under the front lawn, and it costs an arm and a leg to fill, but we have no mains gas here! Only got mains sewage throught the whole village a couple of years ago, so not holding out hope of a mains connection anytime soon!

  • Wasn't there quite enough nob talk on yesterday's daily? :p;):D

    Morning everyone :hello:

Very tired this morning.... Sleepless night brought on in no small part by some wierd goings on by my new neighbours. There appeared to be some kind of house blessing ceremony which invloved a dozen wailing, swaying women walking round the house for an hour and a half playing bongos.
    l

    Haribo x

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I was imagining some kind of pagan ceremony, sort of dressed in white robes like druids (okay I don't actually know a lot about druids, but in King Arthur black and white films they wore white robes!), but the bongos blew that out of the water! You are going to have a lot of fun with your new neighbours I think - hope they invite you to their housewarming party!

Just checked oh's text, yep, def hobnobs he was on about, not going to mention that he wants them drizzled with chocolate for fear of misinterpretation :p;)

*wanders off muttering bongos indeedy and giggling*

  • Mummysaver I will never take offence at anyones suggestions re DS and autism.
He will sometimes have a picnic with me in the house but it has to be at lunchtime never tea:confused:
He also is very routine based over what he will eat.....has taken years to even get him to eat the things he does....he also will only eat certain things on certain days:rolleyes: eg tea on Mon and Tues is pancakes, wont be swayed on this.
He will eat sausages, Fish in crumbs and HM chicken pie...has to have mash on the plate but never eats it:confused:. he will eat peas or carrots no other veg and no fruit at all. When we go anywhere he has a packed lunch with him as the rules of his lunch are too vast to be able to get something while out.
What book was it you read? I read a lot of books by people with autism as it makes me understand him more and why he does certain things.

    :wave:Morning all.

Nice day today so that means laundry, sigh. I have a pile of summer duvets to wash so the machine will be on all day.

Got ahead of myself yesterday by cleaning the bathroom. This is not a normal occurance....I wanted to wash the shower curtains and one thing led to another. I also tidyed out the filing cabinet next to my desk and got all the kids' school and sports paperwork up to date. So feeling quite pleased with myself.:D

Today I have cleaned up the kitchen (this is not the same as actually cleaning it, alas), made a banana cake and a sultana tea loaf for the rugby home baking rota on Sunday, stripped and remade all the beds (winter duvets) and given the lounge a quick tidy.

I only have DS and DH to feed today so dinner is planned...cauliflower and potato cheesey bake plus pork chops in mushroom sauce. The cheese sauce and mushroom sauces are from jars, must admit...when I last went through the larder I kept aside all the out of or soon to be out of code items to use up asap, so that will use some of these things up.

Other plans. Well, DS has Scouts tonight and I have two boxes of assorted old toys etc to take to the Scoutmaster for the next car boot sale, but if I can get up to the attic for an hour I know there's more. I also have this feeling there's a box with curtain tape up there too and I need some more tape so want to check before I go and buy more. Trouble is that it's a humungous attic (45 feet x 15 feet) and you can easily spend days looking for items. I really need to get up there for at least a couple of days and sort it out!

Got to go and pick up a spinning wheel from a friend, plus pop into school for half an hour to look at DD's art display. That's two trips out because I can't schedule them both together...waste of petrol, plus it chops up the day. Then there's Scouts as well and it's my turn to do the run. Some days I never seem to stop getting in and out that car! However, it's my one big luxury to have my own car, so I'm lucky to be able to do it.
    Val.
  • Morning all,

Very lazy start to the day but I am making the most of it whilst I still can before baby puts in an appearance (8 days overdue now!). Washing is on the line but the sky is looking a bit grey so I'm keeping an eye on it and ready to dash out if it starts raining.

Dinner tonight is leftovers from yesterday - didn't bother with my menu planning this week as I thought I'd be eating all my carefully prepared freezer meals but it's amazing how creative you can be with random stuff from the fridge if you need to!

Contemplating doing some baking this afternoon - does making chocolate rice krispie cakes count as cooking?!

  • NPM - just had a google, diff as not sure of the title! It was written by a woman who had pretty much been locked in her own world with very few communication skills, sure I remember something about her stacking cotton reels and the huge noise it made, and how she couldn't explain to others about it as she could't communicate. She did quite a few interviews and there was quite a lot of discussion at the time, as she said it was like she'd one day been given a key to unlock things. She was still autistic but had somehow learned to communicate with others. She did a really long interview on Woman's Hour I think, will see if I can track down the book or her name.

Have you watched the programme that featured the mum with four boys (I think) who were autistic and how she and they coped, it was really good, though how she functioned on so little sleep was truly beyond me!

I can fully understand you taking a packed lunch with you everywhere when you go out, I know plenty of parents who do this whose kids just have various likes and dislikes about food - makes life simpler and nicer for everyone. My dd2 never used to eat pizza or italian style food, so always took sarnies if we were heading to Pizza Hut, raised many eyebrows, but my others like it there, so wasn't fair to penalise them all the time, and dd3 didn't seem too bothered!

I like your ds's insistence on pancakes on Mon and Tues, he has his own mini mealplanning going on - perhaps he's a wee bit OS?! Funny about the mash though, wonder what it is that he likes about it?

All kids are hard to fathom, and it must be hard to work out what is due to autism and what is just one of those things that many children do - guess it doesn't really matter in the end, every child is unique.

ps a picnic is a shared meal, so he is learning from that that people can share food together and not always eating alone can be good too. From what friends with children who have autism or aspergers say, it seems that little steps like that introduce them and prepare them for "normality" as perceived by others. He may never want to sit at a table full of people, but he may one day feel more able to tolerate dinner with his family, due to all the tiny steps.

  • it could be Donna Williams or Temple Grandin.....they are the 2 most prominent autistic women writers.
  • Donna Williams I think? She was really interesting, and notwithstanding the controversy that there seems to be about her, I thought that she gave some really interesting explanations of how it feels to be autistic and why she reacted to some stimuli in the way she did.

OS stuff, to stay vaguely on topic - have made some progress with the kitchen, and filled a bag with the rubbish (girls precious bits that they love so much they want to share with the rest of the family, including odd socks, dolls cardigan and assorted other treasures) from the sitting room and dumped it in their room!
