Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Thursday 17th September. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning peeps

i woke early and couldn`t get back to sleep so i thought that i may as well start my day. Hope that the weather is nice today as i`ve got a load in the washing machine. Some thick things in there and a big coat so fingers crossed for a breeze and some warm sun. The breadmaker is part way through it`s program and i`ve just turned the dishwasher on so that will be ready to empty shortly. It`s strange as although it is very quiet here it still seems later than it actually is. I`ve just nipped upstairs and turned the water on (immersion) and some lincolnshire sausages are cooking away in the remoska so the house smells lovely - i`m taking full advantage of the economy 7 electricity :D i only ever use the immersion heater when i`m up early as we normally use the boiler to heat the water but i`m putting off using the heating etc for as long as possible. We did have the gas fire on for an hour last night though - just enough to warm the living room through as it turned mighty cold later on.

I`ve spent most of my time the last couple of days in the garden, i`ve cleared out the shed and used an old mini greenhouse for shelves as the cover was beyond repair. The shed is now the cleanest and tidiest it has been in years.:rotfl:
The greenhouse is now empty apart froma couple of hundred plant pots that i`ve disinfected, i cleaned all the framework and polycarbonate with dettol and took all the weed fabric up and watered the gravel with vinegar diluted in water with a watering can - smells lovely but will be as close to sterile as i can get it lol

Today i plan on de caterpillering the broccolli and putting that in the greenhouse as although i`ve netted it some of the blasted things have got through, i did manage to find a container that was big enough to hold the elderberries for the wine yesterday so after sterilising it i poured everything in and topped the water up, it`s now standing in my kitchen waiting to be stirred again. I also have plenty of berries left so i may attempt elderberry cordial later today time permitting.:D

Later i think that i may bake a cake for DH to take to work, none for me mind as i`m dieting again from today  i`ll get there in the end

Right - i`ve rambled enough so i`m off into the kitchen for another cuppa and to turn the sausages.

Have a lovely Thursday folks and i hope that everyone has something good in their day!

SD
Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

Wow, Sunnyday, slow down, you're wearing me out! What a lot you've accomplished in the last 24 hours! I must admit, though, I love getting ahead of things if I get up early, and my BM and WM are both on already. Washing will have to be dried indoors - it's rained here for the last 24 hours and is still pouring down.

We have men working on the house today, so the electric will be going on and off all day, so I'm glad I got up early to get the chores done. I won't be able to get much done here today so I might as well sit and knit and crochet all day!

I didn't catch up with the thread yesterday so I hope everyone is well.

Oh, well, off for a cuppa, then a shower, and then I'll do some veggie prepping for tonight's dinner, which will be something with pork chops. Yesterday I made a stew with a chicken carcass from a whole chicken that I jointed (having watched Economy Gastronomy last week) - can't believe how much meat comes off one. I added leeks, mushrooms, and garlic, with some Herbes de Provence and some chicken seasoning, and it was truly delicious. Now I'm going to see if I can find Nigel Slater's BBC website for the recipes from last night's Simple Suppers programme - I just love watching him cook, especially when it's leftovers!

Well, off to put the kettle on.

    Morning all

    Hi Mioliere and Sunny:D

It's my mums birthday today. She hasn't spoken to me in nearly three years now and I miss her very much. I sent her some flowers and told her I loved her on the card. Not much else I can do but it makes me feel sad.
    - welcome2.gif, Nannyboo, good to have you with us.
Mummysaver - thank you, I appreciate the prayers for Tris.
Shellsmithcat - I have never made chicken stock in my life and also use chicken stock cubes occasionally so you are not alone.. Might not be OS but it's bloody easy!
FairyE - Welcome home hon! Well done on safely reaching 15 weeks.
Celyn - Graham Kerr - My mother used to watch him and I remember her having his recipe books! I had completely forgotten about him, he was great fun. I was very young when he was around though, so it's a while before Keith Floyd.
Dazi - Congrats on being a granny again!
Noahs - So sorry you are feeling so poorly, hope you feel a bit better today.
Pippa - Tris has been moved onto new meds because he became dependant on the old painkillers. The new meds are making him really down and flat and it's like he is thinking and acting in slow motion and that is so far from the Tris I know that it's almost scary.
Pen-pin - hope everything went well today and that you are feeling better
Yesterday was gloriously hot again but I didn't get out in the garden. We decided to empty all the wardrobes and draws and sort things and reorganise. We now have two bin bags full of clothes for the charity shop and threw away about another bag full. My OHs dad has inherited some tshirts and jumpers, as has my Godson (everything with amusing or rude slogans on went to him!) We had also picked up some of those suckyhooverstoragebagthingys from Lidls so I moved about a 3rd of my wardrobe of clothes-that-don't-fit-but-I-can't-bear-to-part-with-them into one and had fun sucking all the air out and storing it at the bottom of my wardrobe.
Went bargain hunting at Morrisons last night and got three big bags of organic carrots for 20p each; 15 par baked rolls for 12p; four steak and kidney pies for 10p each (think we have the pie mountain in our freezer); and two loaves of granary bread for 20p each.
I manaaged to make my cheese and onion (and grated carrot and red pepper) pasties yesterday lunchtime and we will have them for dinner tonight with salad with tomatoes and radishes and red onions from the garden.
Well BM and WM are on so the day has really started. Warm gentle hugs.giffor anyone who wants one!

I've been up far earlier than intended this morning after being up with dd a couple of times during the night. Shes fast asleep now and feels like her temperature has come down. Shes still crying when she coughs and I'll keep her at home today but hopefully she'll be back tomorrow. Mums coming soon so I can go to work for a couple of hours to help out as we're so short staffed-wish I hadn't volunteered now.
Hugs to MSD and anyone else who needs one.

    Morning all,

Cooler here this morning, but bright and sunny, I did a wash last night, and put it on the line at 7, got it in at 8.30 and it was mostly dry, I am loving this weather at the moment, long may it last.

I am trying to wait till 1st Nov before I cave in and put the heating on, but we shall see ;)

Diva, how sad that you and your mum are still not talking, the flowers were a nice touch, and will at least make her think of the situation if only for a while xx

Diva, how nice to see you posting again, and congrats on the new Gdd.

Off to work today, need to have a quick tidy round before I go, incase the EA rings.

Omlette and chips tonight, will do a mushroom and cheese one I think, I have some nice eggs from a freind of mine, so should be tasty.

Ok, have good days all xx

    MSD - thinking of you
NPM - hope you are soon feeling better
Laura - I agree, the floddies would be better with all the 'extras' but we are having to 'cook with rations' so no eggs whatsoever:rotfl:

Dry start to the day here in Essex. Washing dried beautifully in the wind yesterday so will iron that lot when I get home from school.
Spoke to the solicitor yesterday - he is still waiting for the signed contract from my vendor, so I will be on the phone to the Estate agent first thing this morning. I just want to get moved now as the stress of the last six months is starting to get to me.
We collected 'our' lamb from the farm shop yesterday so dinner will be roast lamb. It's lovely, happy lamb - they lived in the field at the top of our road. After all the fuss about the primary school slaughtering their lamb, DD1 and I had an interesting debate about it. I am pleased to say that she agreed the lamb should be slaughtered and the children were wrong to give it a name and think of it as a pet. She's a true OS country lass:T
Bought an interesting book at the weekend (full price though:eek:). It's called The Pocket Money Plan and it's written for both kids and adults. We are going to read through it together and hopefully it will embed the OS ethics that I am trying to teach them.
More coffee needed now - yes, the first cup WAS in the garden today:T
    Enjoy your day

    Morning :hello:

Thriftlady, I haven't had a chance to look at Hugh's new book yet, sorry :o So far, it's been a mad, busy week. I'm hoping to have a look through it today.

We went foraging on monday, found some apple and pear trees but the fruit wasn't quite ready to pick so we'll go back at the weekend. Got some lovely damsons and blackberries though :D We emptied the freezers, cleaned them out and rearranged. Mr tru didn't believe we had so much food til he saw it all piled up in the kitchen

Tuesday was my next door neighbour's funeral

Yesterday, I went shopping with mum. She came back to my house for coffee and cake and bought some eggs from me :D

I worked out what we've spent on the chickens so far - the cost of food, hay, feeders and the hens themselves - and each egg (26 so far) has cost us £1.92 :rotfl:

My heating is on and I'm not apologising for it :p

    (((MSD)))

Nearly the end of the week thankfully, shouldnt wish my life away but its been a funny disorganised one. Also am looking forward to tomorrow as off to see Coldplay at Wembley arean - its the last of my 40th birthday pressies.

Today - is office quickly this morning, then tidy up, wash kitchen floor and some ironing. Off to get my eyebrows waxed this afternoon then DD has her first cervical cancer jab this evening - the clinic is over half hour away so will be something on toast for dinner.

OH is still driving me mad at home, hopefully he will be better today. He did get a lot done yesterday but is struggling to get into his own routine without bothering mine! :rotfl:

Still have the last economy gastromony taped so that will be on whilst ironing.

    Have a great day.x
  • Morning everyone.

I had a mega busy day yesterday and the kids were slightly neglected so I think I shall have to make up for that today. BM has to go on again as we get through so much bread.
DS has an appointment at local specialist centre at lunchtime today. Although his pronounciation is very good his speech has some areas of delay so they are going to assess him and hopefully give him some support to improve his communication skills. H is coming home from work to come too as we'll have DD in tow it will take both of us to rein the pair of them in ;)
Playing badminton tonight so dinner will be a makeshift so nice and easy for me.

Weather supposed to be nice, especially tomorrow so am going perhaps try and tidy up the garden a bit. Lawn needs mowing, the blasted twigs are now falling off the Oak trees so have loads of them to pick up (along with acorns) and some of my hanging baskets are now past their best so should empty those - all these are kids permitting :rotfl:

Diva - sorry to see that your mum isn't talking to you. Still you are doing the right thing by sending the flowers and telling her how you feel. I hope the situation improves for you one day hug

Sunnyday - wow you've been a busy little bee.

Curlytop - hope your DD feels better soon

Redruby - good luck with the house selling. Hope you get an offer soon

Lillibet - I agree the lamb should have been slaughtered. Children need to realise where their food comes from. Enjoy yours :D

Tru - not put the heating on so far BUT I do put that down to having cavity wall insulation put in last year. I think it made a difference to how warm the house felt.

mioliere - I watched NS's Simple suppers for first time last night. Whilst I enjoyed watching him cook I can't say his idea of leftovers is quite the same as mine :rotfl:

Anyway kids need feeding (late start today as they were both up in the night ) so hugs to those that need them.
Have a good day OS or not.
