Insure your vehicle or declare it off the road and you won't pay, simple really.
My second (older) car stays in the garage over winter, usually I insure and tax it for 6 months of the year and leave it in the garage for the other, sometimes due to weather or the need for repairs it'll not be on the road for the full 6 months (April to September) and I might swap the insurance around to make best use of it. So for those times I'd leave the retro car in the garage uninsured but leave the tax on it as to surrender the disc then buy a new one which would last for a minimum of six months which I'd then need to surrender (before) the end of September.
Given that you don't get back the full value of a month when you surrender a disc and it only works in whole months this will amount to a stealth tax.0 -
I also thought the same as I read the actual paper article earlier. I suppose to people who only use their cars occasionally over the summer/track days etc as someone said, the only extra they have to deal with is the extra SORN and unSORN paperwork every so often. I did think you'd loose out on your tax but you can get a refund on this as well can't you?
You don't get back the full amount when you send back your tax though. In order to make this fair, they should move to refunding the full value of the remaining time on the tax disc and also refunding by the number of days left rather than part months. OK it would be an extra load of effort but at least it wouldn't be extracting yet more money out of me just to comply with the law. government.0 -
Didn't know that. Doesn't surprise me. Since when did the DVLA do anything remotely useful or helpful for the average motorist?Rallydriver wrote: »You don't get back the full amount when you send back your tax though. You can buy short term insurance. If you can't afford to renew your insurance then how do you manage to afford to renew your tax when it expires? If you can't afford to renew for a short time and don't have off street parking.
Oh, and you can always ask a friend with off street parking or an unused garage if things were that desperate.0 -

so if your £10,000 car was sat on the driveway, untaxed and some clown set fire to it...............................0 -
Teken from the OP's link...Taxed but uninsured cars left on a public road could be clamped or seized under the new laws which are being unveiled by the Government
I've had a car parked outside our house for the last 3 weeks. The tax expired end of june this year. I did the naughty thing and logged onto askMID website and guess what - it's showing as having no insurance. I phoned the Police, who said to phone the DVLA as it's nothing to do with them............! So I contacted DVLA who has yet done !!!!!! all. Maybe if I phone the Police and say some kids are setting fire to it they may come out and contact the owner...0 -
If you did that up here in Cumbria they'd probably sent armed response round there's such little for the police to do!harveybobbles wrote: »Teken from the OP's link...

We had a old toyota jap bus thingy (with finnish plates for some reason) parked up near our house for quite a few weeks. After a while local council stickers were put on it saying 'abandoned vehicle' 'please move within x days or we'll crush it' etc etc. So it might be worth contacting them.0 -
the annoying thing is, it's not technically parked on the road - it's off street parking for residents. My Brother in Law works for the Police and he refuses to look up the owners details on the PNC as they get told off for doing that lol.0

My son did the same. Police not interested, DVLA likewise. The annoying thing is that the car is used daily and is parked on an estate that has a regular police presence.harveybobbles wrote: »Teken from the OP's link...

Oh this car hasn't moved all the time it's been there. Infact it looks quite obvious it's been dumped the way it's parked right upto the hedge...0
