As well as the data protection issue, there is also a copyright issue. The music on the ipod was owned (hopefully legally!) by the ipod's owner. For that music to be passed on to someone else without payment to the owner of the copyright would have legal implications.
It may sound petty, but there is good reasoning behind it.Gone ... or have I?0 -

sporedude? you dont know why your parents werent thanked. Could it be that in their wisdom the police wouldnt give their names and addresses to the owner of the wallet (under the guise of dpa?)? the owner was prob deeply grateful and includes your parents in his nightly prayers - albeit without thier names!0

The police will usually pass on a note or gift in this situation.Gone ... or have I?0 -
The police are talking nonsense. And all the "data protection" reasons are rubbish as well.
And I'll tell you why in one reason:
The police seem to have no problem auctioning off found or recovered ipods (and they're not even necessarily/guaranteed tested never mind "formatted"/wiped/checked)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

All this fuss over keeping someone else's iPod? I wouldn't even have one given.
It's a shame you didn't get it yes but it's not really something worth dithering over, you didn't lose out on anything.Male.

I know from experience that data protection rules are well OTT, you can't even call the hospitals any more for information on dying relatives (won't go there now). This police policy must have made you wild - what were they trying to say that you were one of the 0.1% of people capable of hacking - or that you were going to use the information contained on the ipod in some criminal way ( can't think how) LOL
