I must admit I've not read the entire thread but I thought this may be helpful

I had really bad vision minus 17 and 18 respectively so couldn't have laser treatment. I was experiencing poor night vision and got sent to Moorfields by my optician for a lid lift as I'm almost 50 and gravity is getting it's way.

When I got there I was told yes, sure we can do this, but you'll need to have your cataracts done first. This was the first I'd heard of this and had had not symptoms. It appears they were just starting to form. Anyhow, they removed both cataracts, replaced the lenses with prescription exchange lenses and I now have 20 20 vision in both eyes.

As I had BUPA, it had no cost to me and I've had an op which has a longer track record and lower incidence of problems

This is what I want as -14 and -15. I already get Contact lenses from moorfields but my health insurance wouldn;t pay out for it yet as don't have cataracts. I am 31 and I want clear lens extraction. I guess the price of that it extortionate at Moorfields!

Yep it is, you're looking at around £4-5k. not sure if there is a way around it. Have you talked to your doctor? Is there no sign of cataracts at all? Mine were very very early in their development. I guess it's in the doctor's interest to do as much work as possible so if there is any sign at all they will recomend it.

Why not make and pay for an appointment with one of the surgeon's that do the op and ask for their opinion. You'll get an idea of the costs as well as double checking to see if they can find any reason to do the op via bupa

How is the cost of laser eye worked out?

If your eyes are really bad, say -7, would the cost be highter than if your eyes were not too bad say -0.75?

Yes they do charge more for higher prescriptions
the more + or - you are the more it could potentially cost.
This is because they have to cut more, the calculations involved and the risks go up
I guess also the more it would potentially save you too, in terms of the cost of glasses and contacts.

If your prescription is very bad either + or - some places may say its not suitable. In some cases there are alternatives. Every case is dependant on the individual

  • Hello all,

This is my first post so please be gentle.

The wife has an appointment with Optimax in Bristol tomorrow (21st Jan). Anyone got an outline idea of the final price for intralase lasik with wave front for about -3ish on both eyes? I know there is much talk of discount, but it has taken my wife a long time to build up to this appointment and we want to go ahead the same day.

However, at the same time we want to get as good a price as we can. Probably an impossible task, but any help would be apreciated.

    Hi Gray Man.

Oddly enough I've just found this thread as I'm going to the same place on Thursday for a consult (but not having anything else done at the time).

There is a thread in the referrer's section where people are offering to share their referral money with you. Typically you get £50 off and the referrer gets the same which people are splitting 50:50 with whoever has it done.

My sister in law had her eyes done at the same place so she was going to act as a referrer for me. You can PM me if you want me to ask her if she can do the same for you.
