Allan, the original packaging is probably not available to be sent out with clearance phones as they are usually returned items from customers for whatever reason.
The software you can usually download from the manufacturer web site - what you get with clearance phones can be incomplete contents from what you would get if it were brand new item.
I got a Nokia 6280 a few years back as a clearance deal. Replaced battery - phone was draining - didnt help much. Few months later, it stopped coming back on (or resetting itself) - sent it to Nokia, got it repaired for free (well at least it worked when it came back.
I even lost some cashback as the company failed - luckily not a huge amount, it was fourth claim I lost (for £120), first 3 I had got before company went under. The loss was less as I had made £35 on purchase of the phone plus I sold the phone for around £36 on ebay later. All in all it cost me around £60 for a 12 month contract with a phone which was very good for it did (despite its battery life).
You just have to be careful when you buy clearance phones and unfortunately in your case you probably were not aware it was a clearance.0 -
Could you please explain to me why a 'clearance' phone, regardless of whether it is from surplus stock or indeed a customer return would be packaged in non retail packaging?
Not only has this meant that the phone in question was not supplied with the software necessary to link it to a PC, but also that any future resale value after the end of the contract is severely affected.
Hi,
White boxes are used as we can't guarantee the condition of packaging when returned from a customer, so they are repackaged. All of our "clearance" pages, including the "Clearance Deals" category page and each and every handset page has a "What is a Clearance Handset?" explanation on it that details the fact these phones may come in generic packaging and may not necessarily include anything other than a mains charger and battery.
It also explains that software and manuals are available from the manufacturer's website (indeed you should always use this rather than the included CD wherever possible, as it is likely an updated version).
Clearance handsets offer significantly improved deals over the non-clearance versions so we put them on our website but make sure we explain the possible compromises to customers. Apologies if you missed this information, I'll ask that the explanation is also added to the order confirmation email when a clearance product is ordered so we can be certain customers have seen it and have a chance to amend their order should they desire.

Regards,
Why is an improved deal to buy a dodgy second hand phone thats suspect to go wrong when for a couple of quid extra you can get a brand new unit ?????
Why don't you change it from clearance to returned or pre owned ?It's not just about the money0 -
How does that work then ???

So what do you think will happen to the phone you returned to them? Should that be sold on as a brand new phone or a refurb? And would that be a dodgy second hand one then?0 -

I think because the screen was faulty ie not lighting up on the left half of it. It should be returned to the manufacturer and either used for spares or totaly remanufactured etc.
I don't think it should be stuck in a white box and sent out to the next mug because it would certainly be a dodgy second hand unit wouldn't itIt's not just about the money0 -

Sorry, you are quite right. It's so long ago that your threads began, I forgot yours was broken. But the thrust of the point is still that a number of people send back phones because they either don't like them or they see a better deal. These, even if not used, should be "refurbished" as they are 2nd hand, as well as those that have been properly repaired.
Certainly it should NOT be resent out in an unrepaired state, that's for sure!0
