Has anyone had a hysterectomy?

I have been told by my gynaecologist that I need a hysterectomy, I am 36 years old. I am OK with the fact that I won’t be able to have children as my children are grown up and I do not want anymore – it is now “my” time. However, I have done a lot of reading on the net and am now extremely worried as a lot of women have reported that when they get intimate with their husband it not the same as it used to be. I really am worried as I am only 36 years old and do not want that part of my life to be over!

Can any of you give me your view on things and how it has been for you! Please, please don’t write that I should not have it because I do not have a choice and believe me I would not have one it I did not need it.

Thanks :o

  • I had a hysterectomy at the age of 43 and it made no difference to any aspect of my life whatsoever. I found that information on the recovery time needed was greatly exaggerated and I was leading a normal life within not much more than a month. I was fortunate not to need to have my ovaries removed but I'm sure that someone with experience of HRT can give you information on that.

I'm sure that it's a worrying time for you but my experience leads me to say that you really don't need to worry.

    Good luck

I have! It's the best thing that could have happened for me. The recovery was tough, but once that was over, it was plain sailing! Like you, I trawled the net for info and discovered all sorts of horrors and worries, but remember, it's more often when things go wrong that people post to recount their experiences. But for most women for whom everything went swimmingly, they just get on with life. And to reassure you, there was no diminishment on that side of things. If anything, it improved because I wasn't having to put up with all the awful symptoms that led to it. ;)

Best thing I ever did, and no, your private life does not suffer at all
In fact it's better as it's risk free pregnancy-wise.
And no more Lady Times - a big hurray for that!
Go for it, it'll take a bit of time to recover, just get loads of books and magazines.

  • I had my hysterectomy last year aged 32.. It was the best thing that could ever happen to me..

I was in immense pain at the time but was back in work after 6 weeks ( maybe a couple of weeks too early though, in hindsight!)

In fact, my errr love life is so much better now, no pain, no discomfort and no more planning holidays and special occassions around that time of the month.

Remember the reasons why you have to have it and that alone is enough reason to have the op.

    good luck!
  • oh, and dont forget to prepare to pamper yourself when your home, catch up on the books you have wanted to read, the films you want to see, the long baths..... 100% you time!
  • Best thing I ever did too-and only 8 weeks ago- Out of hospital in two days- driving within 10 days-and away on driving holdiday within 3 ! dont be a martyr to the pain- just be sensible and take it easy- you will tire easily- best advise I could give- as for the intimcy side- nothing changed here for me- I wouldnt even go down the route of worrying about it either- I kept cervix to help with that- :) ( means will still need reg smears)and kept ovaries

Prepare yourself mentally and physically and it will be a breeze- Practically- have a good clean at home first- Bulk cook Prepare etc.. extra shopping-

Post OP- Drink loads and loads of water and Fresh Juice- (combat bowel probs and and wind) Pharrrp .. (scuse me ) lol

Good luck if you go through with it. x

Oh wow, thank you for your posts! I already feel so much better! I am luck enough to keep my ovaries and have been told I "may" be able to have it done "key-hole" i.e.no incision through the belly! He will only be able to tell at the time of surgery! I have jsut been so depressed reading peoples view on the web and have been so anxious! Thanks for putting me at ease :o

  • I was 34 when i had mine, i was not planning o having any more childre. I had a fiberoid (sp) as big as a football,. I had and incision which was rather large because of thei. It was the best thing i ever did, my sex life was fine after. They took my cervix and ovaries so i now take HRT but thats all.
I enjoyed catching up on my reading and film watching while i recovered. I had 10 weeks off work, once the tiredness stopped i enjoyed my me time.
Just remember to take it easy and not do too much. I had the op on the friday and came home on the monday.

I wish you all the best
