  • Can't you just hoover the skirting-boards with a brush attachment and then leave the glasses off? ;)

I would start by sweeping them with a soft brush and then vacuum all over going into the edges with a crevice tool. Then with warm soapy water and a really soft scrubbing brush go over gently. Finish with a microfobre cloth well wrung out.
  • Hehe. If the skiting-boards is the only job you're going to use the Stardrops on (and that would be a daft thing to do) just make up a solution in a bowl. Once you're got it in a spray-bottle you'll be using it on everything, even the dog.

As to scrubbing-brushes: that Wilkos price seems very reasonable but to my mind are not strictly necessary for normal cleaning jobs. Very few of us these days have hard stone floors to clean on a daily basis and that's what they are good for. Normal household cleaning doesn't really need them. BUT everything depends on what you're starting out with. I doubt most grubby households, even mine, really need setting-to with scrubbing-brushes. The only one I use is a small one for cleaning muddy veg or scrubbing out spot-stains on textiles before going in the washing-machine.

You sound dead keen to get sorted, so set-to and admire your handiwork. but keep your specs on

oopsadaisy.. sorry about the awkward multiquoting reply. tried to fix it but made it worse..

thought about getting a book on cleaning and how to get into a routine with it. read one the other day in the shop and nearly bought it.. but thought i'd might read a few pages and then it'll just get tossed into my bookcase where all the other similarly non-engrossing natured books go!

I commend your determination. The only advice I can offer you, apart from that which I've already given you is: do a little and often. Breaking your back on a 24 hour mission and then needing a good lie down is the quickest route to being discouraged I can think of.

No-one ever went to prison for not having a clean enough house. That's my rationalisation for not tackling some well-overdue jobs around here. All this bright sunlight is throwing up all sorts of grubbiness in sharp focus.

Save your book-buying money for a much-deserved novel to read while lounging on the sofa as a reward for getting stuck in with the cleaning.

What you need to read is the "Flylady" thread on here. That's free, so MSE-stylee to the max.

If you've got an iPhone or Android, there's a great little App called HomeRoutines (all one word). It's very adaptable and once you've amended the suggested routine for your own rooms (very simple) you tick off what you've done and you get gold stars! You can set frequency of tasks for daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

It was perfect for me and I actually began to enjoy doing chores.
