I gave up with Freecycle/freegle a while ago due to people either not picking items up or wanting me to deliver1 Also they have now just ended up with people wanting their houses refurnished or asking for totally ridiculous items.

If I cant sell it or charity shop it it now goes to the dump
  • I love freegle. you just post that you want the stuff picking up asap. Never had any problems with our freegle, with people wanting delivery as it is made clear that as the person wanting the stuff you have to collect it.

Two more failled collections yesterday so off to the landfill I go. Not going to waste my time with rude people who can't even be bothered apologising for not turning up when they say they will.

Have you emailed your group moderators to let them know about the no shows? They can't help sort it out if they don't know who is doing it. On our Freegle group in Thurrock, the members are encouraged to email the group moderators and members are removed for good if they get two reports of doing this to others. It's a pain in the backside to be let down this way. Hope your group owners are as helpfull.

Nothing you could send to a charity shop?

I've decided I'll only Freecycle stuff which I really don't think the charity shops will want, but as we have a couple which will take household goods and electricals, that's not very much, and some of them will collect. I've had exactly the same problems with no-shows for quite specialised stuff.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • I think I must just be lucky. I've had 2 collections today from lovely people who came when they said they would. But I always ask people to give me a phone number when they ask for something and I ring them and ask them when they will be collecting. Perhaps having made personal contact makes them feel more obliged to turn up. However difficult it might be, I just could not bring myself to put perfectly good stuff in the bin.

How do you get the Moderators to respond?

I joined two local groups a few months back. I have subsequently attempted to post one offer on both sites and two wanteds - only one version of the offer has appeared. and despite numerous requests to both moderators I get no reply as to why the other messages have not appeared (not even if I've broken the number of postings in a month ruling!)

I find it rather frustrating - how DO you get them to speak to you???

i am confused- brighton is covered by yahoo grous called 'freebrighton', and 'greencyclesussex' (majority of this one are brighton users!)..

why aren't they all called freegle (+ town name)..?

as i understand it, the 'owner' of brighton freecycle group on yahoo got control back, but was also ousted by the USA mob..
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Because they are all independently run, and are actually different groups!

Most of my experience with Freegle has been very good. However, there are clearly some people who appear to reply to an offer on a whim, tell you they need it desperately in order to secure it, then change their minds and not bother telling you.

My advice is to arrange for the collection to be as soon as possible, contact all the other respondents and tell them that if the first person fails to collect then they are next on the list.

If someone fails to collect, even if they contact you with an excuse and say they will collect it later, offer it immediately to the next person.

The biggest frustration is waiting for people so don't wait!
