Power to Freegle (what a daft name!)

The Manchester one is called Greencycle. (It is still part of the Freegle network). I think that is a better name. At least it gives more of an idea what it is about.
  • There are a few Greencycle groups but they are indeed also part of the Freegle network. Its part of the freedom-call our groups whatever we wish and still be part of the network. We are being united with the Freegle umbrella and it will only make life easier in the longrun for members as well as mods. There were some reasons not to use Greencycle as a name in some parts of the country due to other connections with the name. Hence Freegle-freegles freeglism freeglistic freegles freegled-something we were NOT allowed to do with the name Freecycle!
This is the sort of dictation and politics, red tape and so forth that groups were having to go by every day. Members thought it was moderators being a jobsworth(yes an unpaid one) but we were doing what was demanded of us. Do help us to become free. Join your local Freegle.

freegle or greencycle...... whats in a name,
some groups like freecyclebrighton changed its name to GreenCycleSussex on thursday morning (due to an odd set of circumstances we had to go quickly)
but we are still part of the freegle network.

at the end of the day the name of the group doesnt matter...... keeping unwanted goods out of landfill is the ultimate aim of both GreenCycle groups and Freegle groups

so goto http://www.ilovefreegle.org/ and join your local group.....
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Exactly as stated above-whatever the name-keep stuff from landfill!
I like the ilovefreegle.org-its getting better by the day!

  • I am in Cornwall and want to get freegling, is there a local group or is it still under freecycle and is it worth signing up with freecycle or just waiting for freegle ? (Waiting for freegle . . . .sounds like title of a film)

Users of freecycle sites will have heard about problems between the UK and US versions. The upshot is that several UK sites have left freecycle and formed their own network called Freegle.

As far as I know, it still works in the same way - you can offer anything you don't want, and if someone else wants it, it saves the thing going into landfill. Also you get a warm glow from knowing you are giving something to someone who will use it! Or you might find something you just need - which is great for money savers.

More details from The Guardian newspaper here:

This is the new address for the Trafford one:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/trafford_freegle/

And this is Manchester, which is now called Greencycle:
    http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/ManchesterGreencycleUK/

I am sure there are others, but I don't know their addresses.

    Happy recycling! WallyBird.

I've been trying to join the Trafford group myself, but I get an error message...

None of the email addresses in your Account Info are available for this group membership.

I suspect it's a Yahoo! Groups problem, rather anything Freegle-related, but has anyone any idea how to resolve the issue? (My Yahoo! log-in is a Hotmail email address)

Sorry I don't know, but one way round this might be to just get a new yahoo address? I find spare email addresses useful for web stuff, to keep my "best" one free of spam.

It's a spat between UK moderators who didn't like what was happening and the USA directors. Being honest the USA has never really agreed to let the UK be run how some UK moderators wanted to, and hence the split. Yes somethings like MyFreecycle are forced on to some groups, however it was done according to policies that were already in place, so it wasn't a decision on the fly. Although many moderators did not agree with it, they had agreed to follow the rules already set out, and many felt they could not and changed.

If a group has not become Freegle now it's unlikely to become so in the near future, I also suspect that Freecycle groups will re-appear in those locations.

Personally I think it's a bad thing, all these splinter groups do is confuse matters in terms of which group do you use in what location. It's a pity the UK moderators decided to take matters this way. It's not something all moderators wanted, and I certainly have no intention of moving my group to Freegle.
  • Mine that i use here in Shropshire is still called Freecycle well it still was this morning :D and a excellent site it is too i had had couple of excellent things of it. Long may Freecycle or Freegle continue :j

Will speak my mind because that"s how i am :D
