i needs to lose a couple of stone any help?

hiya

i need some support to help me lose weight as I don’t have the enthusiasm or confidence to do it alone so I was thinking of joining somewhere like weightwatchers but not sure which is the best company to join

what I don’t want is long lectures about diets or sales people encouraging me to spend money which I can’t afford on there products

i’ve tried places like the gym and walking but being a defeatist I soon gave up.

if it hwlps i'm a 50 year old male but i’m the type who needs someone stood behind me pushing me rather than someone just giving advice as and when

any suggestions please

  • I found the Rosemary Conley classes good - not only do you have the food bit but the classes also include exercise as well.

I've done weight watchers several times over the last 10 years (after having 2 kids) I've found it good for losing weight - but because I LOVE my food (& and wine!) I'm a bit of a yo-yo dieter. However, i've found after initially joining WW I realise when I'm putting on weight I will re-join the class and rectify my gain. My motivation is that if you are more than 5lbs over your goal weight you have to pay for your class. So, put goal goal weight a few pounds over your ideal weight!
My other motivation when I first started was the thought of having to pay to be weighed in front of someone else:o
    hope this helps :T

The bottom line is that you need to exercise more and eat better.
I personally wouldn't pay anybody to tell me that, but some might.

how about joining an online forum thats free, u will have lots of support, u can list your menus and people can comment on them, read other peoples and generally get motivation.. that way u wont get sales people, u wont have to pay out and if u feel your motivation dippin u can just log on and revive it

there are lots of sites for all sorts of different diets, u need to decide which diet u plan to follow and search out a board for that one and stick with it

    hth and good luck

  • hiya op, I am in a similar position, female (ok thats not the same ), nearly 40 with about 4 stone to lose. I have done WW and lost weight, then motivation, gained weight etc most of my life
I need a "Change of lifestyle" approach rather than a diet - I am swimming in the Great North Swim tomorrow in Windemere, and thought I would lose weight for that, but no, so me and the extra blubber are in the water
I would love a local diet/personal buddy (ie cheap personal trainer), who can look at me as an individual and then work a plan for me,

    good luck.

I lost quite a bit (well a stone and a half) with Rosemary Conley classes and that worked as it combined exercise with diet. I've kept it off longer term and now just go to the gym and don't worry too much about diet, as I eat much healthier now. We had about four guys in the class, and they had quite a good time so you could check out your local one. I think it varies as to whether males attend or not.

well as u can see from my sig i lost 8stone and am now maintaining

the big thing i see is that people use a forum (or whatever) to lose weight then return to their 'normal' way of eating and dont post anymore... course the 'normal' way of eating is what u made u fat so sorry its gonna make u fat again, it has to be a change for life and personally i feel that if u carry on posting on your diet forum it keeps u focussed on your eating

i still post on my atkins/lowcarb forum tho its years later

    http://caloriecount.about.com/

This is quite a good website - I've been a hardcore dieter/maintainer (6 stone loss) for the last three years and this American site has a good free online support community.

A good British site is http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/ you can get on some of it for free but to access the full content you hae to pay.

Other good things are the Jillian Michaels podcasts on itunes - search for KFIAM640 then look on the Sunday bit. She has stopped doin new ones but the old ones are brilliant. Looking at weightloss blogs I find quite helpful as well - there are 1000s of them on the internet. I like dietgirl, pastaqueen, crankyfitness, back to the fridge, back in skinnyjeans to name a few...but there are loads and loads more.

Hopefully some of that will help you get motivated. People say weight loss is just a matter of eat less and move more but it is not as simple as that. Making the decision to change and finding the strength to make positive food choices and exercise everyday is incredibly tough. It is not imposible though - try and work on finding out what motivates you.

One other word of caution - there is no magic pill/cream/soloution. There is no easy way of losing weight. Anyone who is trying to sell this rubbish is no looking after your best interests and it will not help you lose weight or keep it off. Sorry if I sound harsh about this but it makes me really really angry!

    Good luck with it!

People who are looking for a lifestyle change and want a big weight loss to get them going should try Lighterlife or Cambridge diets.

I lost 4 stone in 100 days (16lb in week one) on Lighterlife, 2 years on and I'm a stone heavier than I was (had a very heavy baby 6 months ago) Fantastic. Expensive but still fantastic.

  • I am a big fan of weight watchers, I used the classes and the esource package which gives you access to an online tracker which is great if you are like me and love to be on the net!

I think the key is to make sure and track, once you get into the swing of it you get settled. I am more of a fan of slow and steady - boring yes but it works more long term to keep it off and you can still do the noral things you like - takeaway, wine, meals out.

I lost 4 stone but took 2 years of very slow losing! Am now expecting a baby and will be back there afterwards.

    Good luck.
