FTBs need advice on this house!

Know the feeling, since I put my offer in I just don't want to be at home in my rental!0

It sucks doesn't it? Read my other posts and you'll see why we decided to buy somewhere in the first place!
We'll get to where we want to be, I'm sure!!Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)0 -
i know the feeling too, i'm still at my mum and dad's because i'm doing up the house i bought (no kitchen or bathroom) so i can't even move into it, even though i own it - lol0

I guess I'm getting carried away because we don't NEED to spend money doing it up, it's perfectly habitable right now...
You will find putting up with some older style decor most economical.
Unless you're planning on moving out next year you will have plenty of time to make it as you like. There's no legal obligation to rip out everything that your granny might like.
Constantly shredding houses is very damaging to the planet.
The biggest money saving hint will be to pay off the mortgage before you worry about a bit of decor.0 -
I don't understand poppysarah. This would be our first step onto the property ladder and we're already using every last penny of our savings, and then some, to pay the deposit. We would prefer to be in a house that didn't need work straight away but that house was the opportunity in a million for us. Well, for OH anyway, I wasn't looking forward to doing the work. He liked the house, I hated the kitchen, it was our compromise :-)
We like cooking too and spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It just wouldn't have worked with it as it was!
Carlos, you will get there chap. My mum always says "the first year is always tough" but you'll be proud of your little palace when it's finished. I wish I could help, I need more practice before getting our own place lolYaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. You made the right decision walking away. Looking at past sales no house on that street has ever sold for more than £125,000 - even at the peak. So the vendor is clearly living in the clouds if they expect anywhere near £122,500 considering prices in West Yorkshire have fallen 17% since then and especially with the work that needs doing.
You've probably been saved a lot of hassle, it would be valued well under your offer price for sure.0 -

Feel free to come give me a hand
I'm waiting on new windows, moving electrics and plumbing, plastering, kitchen, bathroom, deco, then move in
So if you wanna play, come down0 -
Thanks Reef. Did you get the information from mouseprice? A poster recommended it for me and I'm very grateful to them for that. That kinda helped in our decision making when deciding how high to go. We don't care that we lost the house, we really don't want to give them our money now :-)
Carlos, are you doing all this work yourself or are you hiring certain people to do the electrics, plumbing etc? I can do little bits (I rock at plastering and I love electrics, but my knowledge and experience is very limited) If you were more local I'd help you out of sheer boredom.
I'm going to post the link for the house further up the street, namely next door but one, and I'll let you all see the difference between the 2. Not a huge price difference, this other one is on the market for a little under £135,000.

Handy thread - me and Sheddy are thinking of buying a place (see thread that he started) thhat requires work and probably has some hidden issues.
I agree with the advice to keep looking around even whilst making offers as there is no need to limit options.
All us FTB's will get there eventually!0 -

I'll be doing most of it myself, i have a friend who's a plumber, and i'll probably need to employ a plasterer (as it's 2 coat plaster, rather than board and skim) but i work in construction so will be able to find someone who can do it quicker than me.
Other than that i'm looking forward to giving it a go, last week i opened up a single doorway into double doors for my kitchen/living room, so definitely not averse to getting my hands dirty.
I've got pics on facebook if you wanna see my progress ;o)0
