Seems like an incredible waste of energy. When increasingly people are being told about reducing their energy consumption by doing things like insulating their homes so heat can't escape out... these things are actually heating the outside air already!

But, I guess, while there are people who buy non free range eggs, gas guzzling cars, leave their pc monitors on, etc, etc, then there will be people who buy patio heaters. I guess it comes down to how much you think/care about the consequences of your individual actions.

(rant over, back to my shell)

I have an idea which could not only save money but could also help prevent global warming and enable people to enjoy their barbecue into the late hours. Instead of buying a paio heater PUT A JUMPER ON!!!
Patio heaters have about as much usefulness as personalised number plates.

You obviously havent owned one, or been to a restaurant where they have one.

You're right scope - yes, they do work, but are horrendously inefficient - as I said above, 14kW is approximately how much it takes to heat a whole house in winter! Just think about that for a moment.

We might scoff about Americans air-conditioning their gardens. This is on the same scale of decadence.

Mercurystarr - We have a chiminera.

When it's going it gives out enough heat to keep even me warm. The garden produces a lot of waste wood from prunings etc which we use as fuel so it costs us nothing to run. It has a grill shelf so you can even barbeque for one or two people.

As for the gas heaters I wouldn't give one house (or garden) room.

This post is about patio heaters for those who might be interested, so any MSE users only concerned with the effect on the equilibrium of the plant, don't read.
An alternative to the gas patio heater is an electric one. Woolworths have one on offer for £39.99( from £99.99). We bought 3 of these last summer on a 3 for 2 deal, and found them excellent. The problem with the gas heater was we were never sure how much gas was left in the cylinder, and electric ones work just as well. These can be for indoor/ outdor use. I think the point most people who use these would agree on, is it's for that time when you want to prolong a pleasant warm summer day into the evening, with even a jumper it still feels slightly chilled. No one I think keeps their heaters on for hours on end needlessly.
He who laughs last thinks slowest.

I wished the buck stopped here as I could use a few.

Why do Americans sing "Take me out to the ball game" when they
    are already there?
