I have pm'd the link to this thread to Soolin, the Ebay BG and expert to see if she has anything she can add to it from the Ebay point of view.

When the auction ended you would have received an email from Ebay titled "Ebay item sold:......", the buyers name and address should be within this email :)

Well done on the win & the sale! :T

There is an awful lot of thread to read so I may well be asking daft questions that were obvious somewhere, so can I apologise in advance please.... :D

Can I just ask what payments methods you actually specified in your auction terms, as whatever you asked for that is what you can stick to. If you said bank transfer then personally I would leave it until Monday just to make sure. Saturday's are not a bank working day and there was a thread somewhere else from the senders point of view (it was ages ago and I can't find it) where someone had sent a bank transfer by accident and I'm sure they were ultimately advised that they could recall it as it hadn't actually occured on a banking day.

Buying on ebay does mean some trust needs to be involved but where you are dealing with a newish buyer I would also suggest a little caution. Have you checked their details, their bidding history and called up their personal details from here:

    http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQtZvbQQsofindtypeZ9

Could you negotiate with the buyer and see if they would be willing to meet you Monday and go to a bank together and take cash from one account and physically pay it inot another? Just a thought.

I'll go back and read some more as I'm sure I've only suggested what others have already said.

Hi - thanks for all your comments!!

Soolin - In the auction I stated I preferred bank transfer (I'd already spoken to my bank who confirmed this was totally safe and probably the best way to do it). I'd also given the option, if they couldn't bank transfer, of cheque or bankers draft, but in all cases I have stated that until the money has cleared in my account they can't have the car (or words to that effect!!).

I know for a fact that, transfering money online (bank transfer) from one account to another in the same bank happens straight away - I've done it plenty of times myself when I've suddenly realised, at some strange time of the night, that I need more money elsewhere. At least, that's how it works in the HSBC. I've rung Barclays (her bank) and they have confirmed that the same is true for themselves. So if we do a bank transfer it should happen straight away.

Saying that, I'm a cautious bod, so if we go that way, and transfer Barclays to Barclays (my dad's account), I'm not releasing the car until I've made sure it's in his account. Which, as he's playing golf tomorrow, means borrowing his computer to check online. If it's there, I will probably set up the transfer from his account to mine (different bank) straight away - maybe that will scupper any reversal? Anyway, I'm assuming that any cancellation could only be made on the transfers to different banks - anything with a "clearance period" seems to be open to cancellation.

The alternative, I was thinking, was going with her to her bank and getting them to count out money in front of me, and then going down the road to mine and sticking it straight in - but even a short walk with that amount of money is going to make me very uncomfortable. I'm just pleased that it is actually a weekend, so my 6ft 4in OH can look menacing! (Note to self - make sure it's all sorted by 4pm - he can't do menacing whilst shouting at the TV!)

Thanks to Jo by the way - of course, I do have her name and address somewhere, I printed that ebay confirmation thing out! :o

Sooo - in theory, there shouldn't be a problem - apart from a bit of hassle zooming here, there and everywhere. I'm just hoping she IS genuine, that it all goes smoothly tomorrow, and that I don't have any problems getting this money - I'll feel awful sending her back home again sans car!

Anyway - hopefully it will all be sorted out tomorrow - I've had my glass of wine, which negated the need for the paracetamol - keep your digits crossed for me! :D

Edit - forgot to mention, both banks (mine and hers) are open until 1pm tomorrow, and I'd prefer to try and get it sorted tomorrow so my OH can be present - she's bringing her boyfriend so I could do with the back-up!

The banks might be open but the systems are not. I've checked with my bank and whlst they process same bank to same bank straight away the actual transfer isn't deemed to occur until the 1st working day afterwards.

I personally would talk to Barclays again on their recorded line and ask them specifically to confirm that if money is transferred into a Barclays account from a Barclays account that it cannot be recalled later. AS for transferring the money straight out that isn't necessary at all. The money going in is a different transaction to the money going out, they can't be linked. So if there was a way to recall the transfer, and I'm inclined to think there isn't, then all that would happen is that your father's account would go into an overdraft situation.

    Hmmm. I'm confused now.

I've just found this on their website:
    Payments to Barclays accounts:
These are made immediately unless it's the first time you're making a payment to a particular Barclays account. If it's a first-time payment, those made before 5pm will be made the next working day and payments made after 5pm will be made in two working days. This restriction is in place to allow us to carry out checks to assist in the prevention of any potential fraudulent activity on your account. If your payment is urgent, please visit your branch with suitable ID or call Telephone Banking if you're registered.
So looks like we'll have to go down the "visiting both banks in person" route.

Edit: and just to cap it off, I found another little gem on the Barclays site which states they have put a limit of £1000 as the maximum that can be transferred through online banking. So it's looking like it's either cash, or she's gonna have to wait!!

    Don't worry Stumpty,

We sold a car a few weeks back for £7000 the buyer sent one email asking what when to come and our full address.

He turned up after a 3 hour drive with the money, took one look at the car, gave us the cash and drove off.

I doubt many car thieves want to drive off in a bright pink ka too

    Congratulations!

  • Stumpy...just wanted to send you a comforting hug for tomorrow. I guess you'll all be on nerves until the money is in your account and you know it can't be withdrawn. I know I would be wittering like mad. At least your OH will be there and I'm sure it will go fine. Am glad you got a good price and that it will clear your debts. Congrats again.
