I went to see this documentary this evening and found it to be extremely interesting, informative and at times, quite frightening. It was absolutely astonishing to see how much information companies etc keep on record. David applied to 80 companies, Government Departments etc and requested to see what they held on record for him and his family. His daughter who is a toddler even had a stack of papers showing information held about her and don't get me started on Amazon!!!!

As I am not a parent I was astounded to find out that in some schools they take the finger prints of the children and they have to register each time they come in and out of school and as they enter every class. I couldn't believe that parents allowed this to happen. However, during the Q&A that followed we were told that one school had never told the parents that this went on. They told the children that they were playing at being Detectives and not to tell anyone including their parents, that they had their finger prints taken!! It never came up but I wondered if parents can opt out of this scheme. Also are the records of the prints destroyed when the children leave the school?

I happened to mention this to the taxi driver who brought me home and I was extremely surprised to find out that this practice takes place in at least one school in Liverpool. He told me that the parents had never been given the choice to opt out but that his fifteen year old son wouldn't agree to have his taken so he could enter the school meals centre and therefore he cannot even go in to talk to his younger brother. The driver will now query if the prints are destroyed because he had never even thought of that.

I expected to leave after seeing this film rather more paranoid than when I entered but I didn't. There were several things that David did or didn't do that most people now do as a matter of course; for instance shredding personal documents. One shock was when the private detectives checked David's rubbish and found a receipt that contained his full credit card number!! I will be double checking receipts from now on.

This documentary did have it's light parts too but overall it made some very interesting points without being stodgy, boring or preachy.

It will be shown on More 4 at 10pm in the True Stories series on Tuesday May 4th and I urge you to watch if you can. It is a true eye opener.
  • Does anyone know if you need a Times+ card to watch Hot Tub Machine on Tuesday 4th May? i know it says it does but do they check??

    Cheers

Apologies if already mentioned but being a sky - pay once customer I've always been able to get free tickets......that has now changed it seems. I'm only a guest.

I guess this will affect those who get tickets without being any kind of sky customer too.

Yes, I can confirm that if you're not a sky customer it no longer lets you book preview tickets, even if you have an account for the website (now called a guest account). This was possible until the latest preview.

Can anyone find a way around this? Am I missing something?

This was done because a lot of Sky customers/subscribers miss out on tickets. The tipping point I hear was the Avatar screening last year where a lot of Sky customers couldn't get tickets.

I would like to take out Sky. Not just for the free tickets but because I, well, want Sky. However, my flat (or the block anyway) doesn't allow satellite dishes so it's not going to happen.

Maybe if I tell Sky this, they'll let me get preview tickets anyway. It's not my fault! :)

Have you looked into getting a communal dish?
