Probably! But then there were some versions which were actually called x.1, such as the 2.1 you mentioned. ME, 2000 and Server 2003 had a different numbering system if I remember correctly. Did it not go something more like 98, NT, XP, Vista, 7?

Although as you say, there would still be more than 7 different versions! Isn't XP 5.1? Although it is completly different looking from the previous version, the kernel it is based on is very similar.

I imagine it'll be the same with 7; it is based on Vista's kernel, but Microsoft just don't want to admit it, so they can get away from all the bad press!:D

Actually, I was referring to the fact that their version numbers kept pace with each other despite there being no sign of any previous versions of the former.
