You could download Ubuntu 9.05 onto a CD and then try it out without loading.

It had email, openoffice, music player, browser, and you can download anything else you might need - free!

Why has microsoft suddenly started with 7 they had 3 then went off on a tangent with 95 98 ME XP why not keep to that trend and call this one Windows premium POO, home edition POO and professional POO, not forgeting Windows Ultimate POO. Would make it more in keeping.

The version numbering is derived from the NT branch not the 9x.

It's only a "logical progression" if they based the names of the other Windows releases on their version numbers, which they didn't.

And even at that, it's a bit of a stretch.

This was probably posted ages ago, but it'll probably do no harm to repeat! Windows 7 is not officially 6.1. Yes, I know this is what the version number will say, but officially it is the 7th version of windows. According to Microsoft, it says 6.1 so that every program which is compatible with Vista should be compatible with 7. That's because programs have a version number check, and the version number has to be within a specified range. If they said the version was 7, then loads of programs might not work.

At least that's the Microsoft theory anyway!

That NT was released immediately as a .1 release as to not appear somehow technologically lesser than the already released Windows 3.1?

There have been many more than seven versions of Windows though; Windows 1, Windows 2, Windows 2.1, Windows 3, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows CE, etc etc.

I think they just thought "Windows 7" had a certain ring to it.

I run a dual boot with Vista but I am planning on removing Vista real soon as windows 7 fliers in comparison to Vista
