Some Ebay advice please

If I were you I'd pull out of the sale. The seller is a newbie (registered on 30/04/06). His/her first item to sell is surprise surprise a laptop. He/she was prepared to send the item via Royal Mail standard parcels and he seems fairly desperate for the money, especially by adding 'THE FIRST PERSON TO OFFER ME £500 CASH CAN HAVE THE LAPTOP ANY OFFERS' to his/her auction. Also he/she doesn't want to provide you with a contact no. It all seems far to suspicious to me.

He has said he doesn't want to give me a contact number. If he is genuine I wouldn't like to risk the negative feedback so I will pay for it on a credit card to give me some protection if I go ahead.
He isn't genuine if he won't give you his contact number.

I hope you haven't sent that Paypal payment yet!! He is no longer a registered user on ebay. If you have sent payment, contact Paypal asap to reverse it. Good luck0

It gets complicated now as paypal are not going to automatically give you your money back quickly. You can try calling them and explaining what has happened, but it is very likely they will just promise to investigate or similar until day 7 when you can formally start the chargeback process.
Meanwhile call your credit card company, they may want you to wait until the paypal investigation fails, or they may help you straight away by sending claim forms for you. However they are not experts in ebay so it is more likely that they will also delay you for some time as all they will see is that you paid yesterday and cannot possibly expect goods for a while yet. However, it is worth a try.
lastly, paypal have tried outlawing the use of credit card chargebacks by threatening to limit or even close the paypal accounts of people who resort to CC claims. However, I wouldn't be too concerned at thi spoint as they cannot stop you going to your CC company and your main concern must be to get your money back.

I used to be a power seller on eBay.
The thing that you did right is pay from your credit card
The one thing that PayPal or their users have no control over is your credit card company.
If the goods don't turn up or it is faulty then tell the CC company who will reverse the transaction. Paypal recharges the individual concerned and surcharges £7.00 in admin fees.
A lot of sellers are very upset by this as it is the sellers that pay the charges 3.4% + 20p Paypal allways takes the side of the buyers.

Quite right, never again bid on something that doesn't feel right and from a new seller. If these sellers did not attract people willing to bid they would soon have to give up their scams, please don't encourage them.
Feedback is there for a reason, if you are buying expensive items then do your homework first, check out the seller *before* you bid. It's just like buying from a bloke in the pub, would you have given a stranger that no one in the pub knew or could vouch for £450 in cash in a pub and expect him to turn up a week later with a laptop? I don't think so, therefore treat ebay the same.

Have you just emailed them or have you filed a claim? An email may not be seen for a day, but if you file a claim (login, go to resolution centre then file a claim) it should freeze the funds in the seller's account until it is resolved. Hopefully you can do this before he has time to withdraw the moneyyozzer2006 wrote:Thanks Richard and Soo. I have been in touch with Paypal expressing my concerns and I am awaiting a reply.
