when they promised max 6 for my area.

How can they promise max 6 and then have it drop to something so slow???

One thing I can guarantee is that BT are doing exactly what they said - they "promised" you a "max of 6" - that is exactly what you are getting !

NO ISP will not promise any speed, there are so many variables most of which are outside their control - your house wiring, your filter, your router/modem, your PC/browser.

How far are you from the exchange ? - that is usually the main reason for slower speeds, ask a neighbour what they are getting.
  • The exchange is quite close to my house....guessing.....1.5 miles. How do I find my line stats?

I have just gone to a website called asksam, and it says I should be getting 6.5meg. Don't know how accurate this is though!

Yes, I guess you're right there! It just seems that it's far far slower that what I was getting before, and when I phoned BT they did say that it was slower than it should be. I find it very frustrating talking to them knowing that they are on another continent with no idea what my particular setup is! Is there anything I can do to improve things regarding wiring/filters etc?

  • Another question, is there a technical dept in the UK I can talk to, or do I have to phone India?

    Hi stormywaters,

Do you still feel your Broadband service is not performing as it should? If you would like to send me a PM with your account details I can run a diagnostic from our end to get a clear understanding on how the circuit is performing. You can also send your details in an email format to forum.moderation.team@bt.com.

    All the best,

    Hi Robbie,

That's really kind of you, thanks! I will PM you with my account details when I get home at 4.30 if that's ok?

Out of curiousity, what IS the average broadband speed from BT? Does it vary so greatly? As I said I live quite close to the exchange (Tweedale, Madeley, Telford).
