PS3 or XBOX 360 Elite?

  • Can't get around the fact that there's no component cable.

I know the Arcade model only has a composite as my youngest has one in his bedroom, but to only supply that with the more expensive models seems ludicrous.

  • PS3 Wins every time.

Better looking console, FREE online gaming (unlike 360), and also a free blue ray player as part of the PS3.

PS3 also has BBC I player (all bbc programs when you want), VidZone (All the music videos on demand) and many other great add-ons - ALL FREE.

At the moment the games are of similar quality, however PS3 has less fault issues (like the XBOX rings of death) and also overtime its games will be better than xbox's, once developers fully understand Sony's system and use it to its full capabiluty.

I don't want to start an Xbox 360 vs PS3 debate, but I'd have to disagree.
    Better looking console

That's very much a matter of taste.

I happen to think the new slimline PS3 is butt-ugly.
    FREE online gaming (unlike 360)

Yet the Xbox 360 has a better online gaming experience.
and also a free blue ray player as part of the PS3

The Blu-ray player isn't "free", you pay for it when you purchase the console.
PS3 also has BBC I player (all bbc programs when you want), VidZone (All the music videos on demand) and many other great add-ons - ALL FREE.

And the XBox 360 has the XBox Live Marketplace, which the PS3 does not.
At the moment the games are of similar quality

At the moment, the XBox 360 games are often of a better quality, and there are more of them.
however PS3 has less fault issues (like the XBOX rings of death)

If you had read the link I posted above, you would see that the last hardware revision massively reduced the number of RROD failures. When they're removed from the equation, the XBox 360 and the PS 3 have similar failure rates.

I'm not saying the XBox 360 is a paragon of reliability, just that the PS3 isn't either.
and also overtime its games will be better than xbox's, once developers fully understand Sony's system and use it to its full capabiluty.

    So the story goes.

Three years later, we're still waiting.

The one blemish on the otherwise welcomed news about the Xbox 360 Elite price cut is that, going forward, the new, cheaper Elite bundles will no longer ship with a once standard HDMI cable. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Well, at least it still comes with component cables...right?"

Wrong! No component cables either! All you get is a dinky set of SD composite cables that will go quite nicely with the other 29 sets of composite cables sitting in that bag in the closet. Sadly, Microsoft has taken one of the less desirable pages out of Sony’s playbook on this one, leaving it up to users to supply their own way to maximize the full HD potential of their consoles. You know, the same glorious HD that both companies have used as the major selling point for both of their next-gen consoles from the beginning.

However, as Microsoft's vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe, Chris Lewis, explained to GamesIndustry.biz, there was a very good reason for deciding to remove HDMI cables from the Elite bundles.

"We wanted to get the Elite pricing to a figure that is acceptable for consumers so they have the option of a premium console gaming experience. Removing the HMDI cable gives the flexibility to consumers who can then decide which type of cable they want for their specific gaming and TV screen set-up."

See? Microsoft was including $100 HDMI cables with every Elite, so naturally, that was how it was able to drop the price so dramatically...I mean, I guess Microsoft figures consumers will be more than happy to buy their own cables now that they are saving $100 on a new console, but come on. People want to be able to play their newly purchased, HD-powered consoles the way they are meant to be played right out of the box.

Actually, to help drive this point home, I suggest anyone who buys a new Elite only play it using the composite cables, and then write to Microsoft complaining about how crappy the "HD" picture quality is, and then demand a refund. After that, do the same thing to Sony, since it started this ridiculous trend with the original PS3, and continues to stand by it with the PS3 Slim. Hey Sony, why not take some of the money you're saving on producing PS3 Slims, and invest in HDMI cables to include with new systems? Are you afraid gamers will love you too much?

What do you think of this whole HDMI cable nonsense? How many people are planning to pick up a new Elite anyway?

An interesting read, but I still say it's a non-issue.

Buy an XBox 360 for £30 less than before, order a £5 HDMI cable from Amazon while you're at it, and you're £25 up.

Though slightly inconvenient, it's hardly cause for complaint.

i must say i found it odd that the component would not be included. afterall the regular av connectors and the component connectors are all part of the same cable. well they are in my old 20gb console.

that cable does not look like a component cable as it only has 3 connectors.
