since when was it a decided factor that xbox controllers were better than ps3 controllers? thats more opinion is it not.
personally i get RSI from xbox after 1hr+
ps3 controller sits far more comfortably in my hand. #
as for op, ps3 is my reccomendation, but both are very good and he will be more than pleased with either
main points are what his friends have
what features hed prefer(xbox has sky connectivity if your an existing customer i believe, ps3 give free hd music videos, a tv service comparable to freeview or freesat and iplayer for free.)Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Online the xbox is better. Bigger community and more online games
graphics PS3 is better as it has a stronger engine.
Games available xbox is better. More selection and they are starting to get alot of exclusives.
Price: xbox seems cheap but after you throw in a plug in and play charger (needed so you wont spend a fortune on batteries), £40 to play online per year (although you could make this an annual birthday present?!) and possibly a wireless adaptor to play online (unless his xbox is near to the router?) then you will be looking at the same price as a PS3.
i went for the xbox as thats what my mates have and i wanted to play against them online. Maybe its worth asking what console his mates have? its more fun to play with/against mates online than anything else.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -

xbox 360.
bad things,
1. runs quite loud although you do get used to it.
2. higher than acceptable failure rate with the 3 red lights and even 2 red lights.
3. £30+ per year to play online.
you can get xbox live 12 month subscriptions for under £30, you just need to search around, ok so it costs for xbox live but you get a better service imo but you pay for what you get,0 -

the reasons i think the 360 controller is better are,
1. the sticks curve in instead of out so your thumb fits in nicely and is less likely to slip.
2. the two sticks are too close together on the ps3 controller. the left stick needs to be were it is on the 360 controller.
3. l2 and r2 are triggers on the 360 which works better.
4. l3 and r3 works better on the 360. on the ps3 i have often been using the right stick to look around and very easily it gets pressed and therefore activates whatever r3 is, usually aiming or zooming.0 -
Not quite as clear cut
Every single PS3 owner is able to play online for free, 360 is only available for gold members (oooer). However, there are more 360 people with headsets and they all seem to be 12, and from nowheresville, usa.Online the xbox is better. Bigger community and more online games
Although in theory the PS3 hardware is stronger, the full potential of each has yet to be tapped. For the most part, the same games look around the same on both consoles. In some cases, the 360 looks better but that' almost certainly down to the extra experience the programmers have had.graphics PS3 is better as it has a stronger engine.
Down to personal taste, Halo, PGR, Forza and Crackdown are great but so are Killzone2, Gran Turismo and inFamous. Most games are coming out on both consoles. Besides, a lot of the games are just shovelware.Games available xbox is better. More selection and they are starting to get alot of exclusives.

Ultimately it will most probably come down to what people he know have.i went for the xbox as thats what my mates have and i wanted to play against them online. like i said its not "better" those are your opinions
for me xbox 360 sticks are too far apart despite me having large hands
the controller is rather bulky and quite heavy in comparison (and ugly)
that curve you speak of i think feels more comfortable than the concave stick on xbox
the springs on the ps3 controller seem more responsive and allow a slightly larger radius for movement meaning higher accuracy
those are a few points but like i say its opinion and personal preference in most cases
you prefer what you play with.... so not "better".... different.
oh and 50 hours play (in my experience) without charge and without an additional battery pack for that matter;)Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

Many thanks from a clueless Mum!!!!
Ok, an Xbox 360 doesn't need anything more than an ethernet cable to plug into your router - no need to shell out for a wireless adapter, and a therefore a wireless router is not needed.
From experience ( Mum to2 boys 12 and 17) I would suggest that you find out which console your son's friends have and which games he would like to play, and take it from there. It is likely he has played both consoles at some time in his friends' houses so he probably has a preference himself.
I would also reiterate that you can get the xbox live for £30 online and this is a great service. My youngest goes on Live to chat with his mates from school - saves my phone bill- and they can play games together at the same time.
Just my 2pworth

It's only a game

Thanks to everyone for all your help.
I'm going to try and fish for details about what his friends are doing, I didnt; realise that you could go online and chat and play against friends! Thinking of going for the xbox at mo, unless his friends all have ps3's!!!
Its going to be an expensive one this year! :rolleyes20 -
