My wife bought at ball gown from e bay. She looked really good in it. IRC it cost her around £30! It's probably worth around £150.

She got it for one occasion with the view that she could bin it afterwards if it wasn't great but she's worn it since and it's still taking up space in her wardrobe ready for the next!

I'd rather get a second hand one than buy a new one from China/Ukraine.

If you buy from China you may get hit by customs and I wouldn't be too sure of the quality of their fabric.

UK is a lot less hassle & easier to sort out if there are problems!

There are plenty of UK people selling new dresses due to failed relationships.

Some of the Maggie Sottero dresses for under £200 brand new are absolutely gorgeous! These cost £1000 new in the shops :)

I bought my wedding dress from Singapore. It was made to measure and was absolutely stunning! I paid £10 for the dress and £30 p&p and i could have never asked for better. It was ordered, made and delivered within 4 weeks and fit like i'd had it made here with a professional fitter. The fabric and detail was fantastic. There were no custom charges and no hidden costs. If you're prepared to have a bit of trust and wait, then go for it. I'm so pleased I bought mine from there as I ould have never afforded to buy the same dress here!

If you do decide to buy from overseas then make sure you only pay by paypal fully funded from your credit card. Many of the Far East sellers have £10 dresses with £100 p and p and if the item does not arrive and you have to rely on an ebay claim all you will get back from ebay is the £10, with a paypal claim you get the full amount.

Also, like roses said make sure you allow for customs charges. Like alanalea confirms many items slip through (I recently had a dress made for me in the uS which has not attracted charges even though they declared the amount at $50). However items over £18 from outside Europe are subject to charges.

Edited to say that It wasn't a wedding dress I recently bought!

  • Hiya,
My sister is getting married in Aug 2007, and gave me the task of finding cheap bridesmaid dresses (she knows I can hunt out a bargain:D ) I originally looked at the ones from China and H/K on ebay but they weren't suitable. I did find a seller on there from the US. I emailed her several times, just so I could find a little more about her. I then bought direct from her, I got three gorgeous dresses, which came with a wrap and optional straps. They are great and will wrk perfectly with the black/white theme. I managed to get a discount aswel. She originally wanted £50 + £12 p+p each, but in the end I paid £150 for all three inc postage. She sent them seperatley and put gift on the parcel and total price of £15 on them, I did wonder why at first but my friend said it was so I didn't have to pay customs stuff!?

If I were you, and I had seen a dress then I would contact the seller, build up a rapor. You will be able to see then how good they are at communicating. If they don't respond to emails fast enough I wouldn't bother- it may be a sign of things to come if something were to go wrong. My seller responded within a couple of hours to most of my mails, except the ones I sent early in the morning because of the time diff.

The thread has now been merged with a previous thread asking the same question. Hope this gives you some more ideas. :)

  • I bought a new, NOT made to measure WD from Ebay and had it altered. It really was BNWT, but my pleasure was very very slightly marred by the fact the seller had left the 'Age Concern' label on. Still, it was a new dress, and I've never seen that design before or since, so I was still :j

With regard to having a dress made to measure, someone gave me some excellent advice once. She said the important thing was making sure the measurements were right. Her view was that the dresses are usually well made in the Far East, to the specifications given. However, while she'd had her measurements taken by a tailor, and the result was great, another bridesmaid (on this occasion) had her measurements taken by a friend, and the dress was made to spec but didn't look anything like as good as hers. HTH!
