They are very nice, very modern. But very designer in price. I'm sure you could get one made somewhere else cheaper though.
I have a quote in front of me (random card on desk that wasn't thrown away) for a MQ cut 0.27c for £2795, the matching band was £1195.0 -
What reason did they give for not wanting to do it with your diamond? I am interested as I have a few loose ones I'll want set eventually!
They didn't give a reason but I'm assuming it's because they can't make enough profit if you supply your own diamond!! Maybe I'm just being cynical? Quotes we have had to have a ring made using our own stone are the same price as buying a ring with a diamond in!!0 -
well, one of the reasons is the jewellers insurance.
Diamonds can break when they are being set - due to the internal flaws, or a stray wack with the hammer when setting the prongs. Now with some jewellers their insurance wont cover a stone that they havent sold, with others, it may well be that there is no money in it for them - some jewellers dont have their own workshop, and use an outside person who does their work for them, as well as the work from other shops.
in other cases there will be jewellers who only make jewellery, and may sell diamonds as a small part of their business2009 wins: Signed Saxon CD, Solar Torch, Drumsticks, Priest Feast Tix, Watch, Hammerfest tix :beer:0 -
HI everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here. Firstly, thanks for all the great advice in this thread - I read through pretty much all 41 pages before popping down to Hatton Gardens today for a first look around (planning to pop the question in a few weeks). Anway, I found that A&S in particular grabbed my eye, and I found the following that I really liked:
Date of Issue: March 16, 2009
Laser Inscription Registry: GIA 2101582386
Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 4.19 x 3.99 x 3.38 mm
Carat Weight: 0.46 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS2
Proportions:
Depth: 84.7%
Table: 66%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None
Clarity Characteristics:
Feather
This was in a really nice platinum ring, and he was offering it to me for approx £1250 (window price was £1500 but they had a '15% sale on'). Can anyone advise me if this is a good deal or not? I really liked the ring, and it sparkled like a disco ball (even away from the bright lights), but my concern based on previous posts is the depth, which looks a bit on the high side.

I don't think that is a good price. The most important factors of any diamond are the weight and cut. Although you have a good colour and no visible inclusions the cut will not show those factors off as well as a very good symmetry. If possible find the 2 next to each other and see the difference in fire and sparkle.
At the end of the day, if you like it you like it. If your gut says yes then there's no reason not to go for it.Kwai Chi

Kwaichi, thanks for your reply. I’m a bit surprised as this particular diamond really stood out from the other 3 or 4 I looked at (admittedly I don’t know what their symmetries were) for the amount of fire and sparkle it had. Would moving from Good to Very Good make that much of a difference? Do you think it was a few hundred quid overpriced – the price I mentioned included the 15% discount but can probably be haggled down a bit more - or would you totally avoid it? I agree with what you said about following my gut, but I do have time on my side and work quite close to Hatton Gardens, so I can afford to be picky.
Thanks again0 -
Hi EastEndStu,
My husband found my engagement ring online, then went down to Hatton Garden to view the diamond and choose the setting. Have a look at qualitydiamonds.co.uk - they have a really good search facilty and they have a 0.46 E VS2 for £645 - the settings are extra, but not too much (from what I remember!)
Good Luck!:DEastEndStu wrote: »HI everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here. I had one diamond form a previous engagement and the new one we got recently. My old one was .6 good symmetry, very good polish, colour j, I1. Looking at that compared to our new excellent symmetry ring it makes a massive difference imo. The other factors do make a difference when the diamonds are side by side and the inclusions in the old diamond will make a difference in how much sparkle there is but I don't think it would make as much a difference as the cut. Whereas you have to have a pretty good eye to see the colour and inclusions, the sparkle and fire can be seen by anyone. It's like walking down a shopping mall isle and you see a fleeting light pop up from nowhere in the corner of your eye compared to actually looking for the ring and seeing the sparkle.
I think if you are unsure then go and just look at loads of loose diamonds and get really familiar with them. Then look at loads of diamonds in settings. The more you look at them the more you will see the differences. Then let your gut do the choosingKwai Chi

if it was me, i would be going for a princess that had been graded by the AGS lab for it cut.
something along the lines of: this 0.52 G VVS2
maybe with the ring in platium: here
Top scorer in cut quality and would be, after importation taxes & postage about £1650 or so, maybe a bit less. And i would lay money that you could tell the visual differance in the cut to the one you saw in Hatton Gardens. Someone may have recommended them before. But I can't enough for how good www.diamondmanufacturers.co.uk were. They are based in covent garden in london. I designed my own online and had it within a week with all the certificates etc. However, I got the size slightly wrong, they resized it for free!:T If you don't have anything sensible to say, don't say it! :T0
