Ok, So looking around I have found the following GIA: 6107425664

    Round Brilliant
    Measurements: 5.40 - 5.45 x 3.28 mm

    Carat Weight: 0.58 carat
    Color Grade: F
    Clarity Grade: SI1
    Cut Grade: Very Good

    Proportions:
    Depth: 60.5%
    Table: 56%
    Crown Angle: 34.5°
    Crown Height: 15.0%
    Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
    Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
    Star length: 50%
    Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Very Thin to Medium, Faceted (2.5%)
    Culet: None

    Finish:
    Polish: Excellent
    Symmetry: Excellent
    Fluorescence: None

Looking at getting this in a platnimum 3mm band for £1460 online.
Have run it through periscope and it scores highly the only piece I'm unsure of is the Girdle part?

Any views as this looks like the one to me ;)

yip, i agree - the numbers look good - i wondered why the GIA graded the cut as 'very good' as opposed to 'excellent' i guess the optical symmetry isnt quite there. (the grade 'Symmetry: Excellent' refers to something else - how well adjacent facets meet)

heres something to read on girdle: http://diamonds.pricescope.com/girdle.asp

so i'd say, if you like the stone, and its within what you can afford - go for it (and it looks a better cut diamond than the first one based on the numbers)

ps. have a good look at the stone close up and see if you can borrow a loupe to see if you can spot the inclusions - they shouldnt be able to be seen with the naked eye too easily at SI1 clarity.

Thanks to everyone for their help so far.
I have narrowed it down to between the stone listed previous a 0.58 ct or the below 0.5ct

Overall I'm happy to be getting a 0.5+ on my budget as didnt think I'd be able to get a good quality diamond of that size so its whether the 0.58 will look much bigger than the below 0.50 which seems a big 0.5. Also the 0.5 seems to have the better girdle?

The 0.58 is coming in at about £130 more expensive but both are affordable

    Pavilion Angle: 40.6°

  • Thanks to everyone for the advice above. While reading through I noticed a link to a Paul Spurgeon ring:

    Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring
    £4400.00 PSRP11
Platinum 'Embrace' ring with 0.50ct marquise diamond. Colour grade G; Clarity VS1.

(from Avantgarde - am unable to post the link...)

What are people's thoughts? It's a fair bit outside my price range but I really like it. However, given what I've read here it's maybe overpriced somewhat? Any suggestions on this or other contemporary ring makers? Many thanks. Best - Kiltrunner.
  • For that money, you should be looking closer to 1ct (G/VS1)
  • Aye Ringo, that's what I thought from all I've read on here. Just wanted to check. Back to the drawing board then.....
  • Can I just offer some advice re insurance? As I posted on another thread, my engagement ring has gone missing (had decorators, house in a state, now can't find it anywhere).

Anyway, I'd kept the receipt from 10 years ago but other posters have said it needed to be valued every couple of years for insurance. And that's my free advice!! Hope it helps someone. x
  • Hi

I am thinking about popping the question whilst on a trip to New York in September. I would like to know if it is still cheaper to buy from New York with the exchange rates etc. If so, can someone please recommend a good place to go?

    thanks

Hi everyone, thinking of going to hatton gardens to get something custom made according to a design I've seen online. Which stores are the best in terms of value? I'm assuming most of them have good gems and a big bunch of them will be able to do custom work, but I want to know if there are some shops that are reputed to have the best prices.

I've heard good things of MNM ceylon gems and also A&S...there must be more of this kind??

    Thanks a lot guys!!
