    Hi,

I have been reading this thread with eager eyes, I have been looking for a ring for girlfriend and choice in Glasgow is good but not great, thinking about going down to Hatton Gardens London, and in there we should be able to find something perfect for her.

I am looking at a budget of £3000 - for a single brilliant cut diamond, I have managed to squeeze information out of her, so know thats what she likes.

Would prefer platinum than white gold, what sort of size should I be looking at? Thinking around .70 carat? Can you haggle at Hatton Gardens?

    Perfect,

I am hoping, and I do not know if I am wildly wring but can I buy the ring there and then, or do I need to come back another day for it?

If it is the right size you will be able to take it away. If you want them to resize (which they should do for free) you may have to wait. You could pay and ask them to send it to you special delivery once it's ready? Or put down a deposit and pay the balance when they are ready to send it?

    Hi all,

What are people's thoughts about palladium as a choice of ring?
If its acceptable, it would free up ~£300 more for the diamond. Not looking to spend over £1000, so £300 makes a BIG difference to the rock :)

    Thanks in advance

The difference between Palladium and Platinum is not a huge one - Palladium does not come hallmarked, apart from that they are very similar. If you've got no hang-ups re wanting a 'brand' metal Palladium will do just as well. If you want to see it before buying over the internet, high-street jewellers such as Ernest & Jones and Samuels are stocking these rings.

I would say go for the Palladium and get more stone. I know what would have impressed my WTB more.

Good luck with getting the ring sorted and of course with popping the question.
  • Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice. I'm planning on asking "that" question in about 5 weeks, and I want to have there ring with me - so I've got some work to do!

I've been reading this thread, and a lot of other sites, so I'm reasonably up to speed with cut, colour, clarity etc - but I've a question about the metal for the ring.

From what I've seen, Platinum is very expensive compared to White-Gold, but I'm not keen on WG as its basically just a plating. Why pay all that money for something that isn't what it appears to be (just my opinion!!)

I've been looking at Palladium - from what I've read, it seems to be an ideal choice, and its a fraction of the price of platinum, whilst looking just as good.

If people think its a good idea, does anyone know of some websites that would be useful for me? I'm happy to buy online - as long as its from a reputable company (i.e. recommended by you lot!!)

    Thanks in advance
Palladium is very light and doesn't feel at all substantial if you see what I mean. Plus it's quite brittle so you need a platinum head to set the diamond for it to be safe. With a budget of £1000 i'd go for white gold as you can get a very white alloy (check when buying!). Plus it doesn't cost a lot to re-plate.

If you know what style she wants go online, we got one from Samara James -plus there's loads more companies to choose from if you google search "engagement rings" i'd have thought you should do better than a 0.7ct for £3000 online.

    I had a look on Samara James - i choose a VS2 Premium F Colour 0.8 Carat in Platinum and was £3123

I could go white gold SI2 H Colour 1.0 Carat for £3430 - but would not want a low quality diamond - much prefer smaller, better one
