Diamond geezer seem to be pretty good. I actually went to bluenile.co.uk (there is a .com as well) to get in on the american market. Although bluenile are not the cheapest by US standards, I was able to build a ring with exactly the diamonds I wanted for significantly less than it would have cost for the same here in the UK.2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.0 -
As someone has reccomended on another thread, and I thought it was a great idea (HINT HINT Boyfriend of mine
). How about buying her a cheap one (£10 type thing from argos) for the proposal then explain (very quickly) that youll take her shopping and she can pick her own one.
Not only do you not have to stress about picking the right one, she can enjoy herself trying them all on!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -

I only wish my fiancee would have done this! She wanted a surprise! It is one hell of a pressure to spend many thousands and hope she likes it!2 + 2 = 4

I can't thank you all enough for your response, it was much better than I was expecting, thank you so much!
I went to hatton garden yesterday, I think I am definately going to try birmingham too, does anyone have a road name or a shop's website address so I can find it?
I must admit, I was looking at argos, although I wasn't too taken with any of the diamond rings (and to be honest hatton gardens seemed cheaper for similar quality) the bands seem so much cheaper in argos.
Well I am off to look at all the sites recommended, thanks again! I will keep you updated, any more sugestions please let me know.
By the way I did buy her a cheap ring to propose with, I'd like to find a nice one now to keep,
Best regards,

Just a suggestion. When I proposed to my girlfriend (now fiance), I checked with with a couple of her friends (who could keep a secret - choose carefully) what kind of rings they thought she'd like. It worked out pretty well - she liked the ring, but she found another one that she loved more (luckily blue nile has a good return policy).
Anyway, I wish she would have told me what she wanted ahead of time... But it all worked out well in the end. To answer the OP's question, I spent what I could pay off before I had to pay interest on my credit card
Also, a few of my friends have had it easier. One of their girlfriend's found a site with ring reviews, that let them "drop a hint" to let them know what they liked. Once one found, a bunch of her friends did the same thing.
probably scared a few of my friends, but 3/4 of them have gotten engaged already so I guess it worked!0 -
Mine came from Goldsmith's Jewellers - they have branches in most high streets - but go to an outlet store, most of the rings are 50% off, so I got twice as good a ring as I'd have got locally. It was a surprise too, a plain 18 ct yellow gold solitaire, 0.3 ct diamond - and I'm more than happy with it!:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

I say buy what you can afford. What's the point of buying expensive engagement rings if that means you're going to start your marriage up to your necks in debt?0

I have just recieved my engagement ring, as when my gorgeous Fiance proposed he gave me the ring, but it was way too small. He was told by the jeweller that even though he knew my size they would only sell him the ring as it was and get me to go in to have it re-sized.
I took the ring in the day after the proposal and was told it would take 2-3 weeks to re-size. after 3 weeks i contacted the jeweller and was told it would take at least 4.5 weeks!!!!
I got a call on Friday last week, one month after taking the ring in, and so i rushed to collect it. They did not care about how much it hurt to give my ring up after just one day.
But i am thrilled to finally have my ring and i don't think i will ever take it off!Leopardlady
