  • oh yeah, forgot to say:

Don't forget, if you are buying gold rings, to consider what the carat of the wedding band will be. Try to keep them the same carat or the harder ring will wear away the softer one.

My friend got engaged quite recently and got a beautiful second hand ring. Mine was second hand as well but I looked at so many new ones and they were too tall and i didn't like them.
They are so much cheaper so you get a lot more for your money and you can find some really original ones as well.

Also if you just pop along to cartagena in columbia you'll find loads of lovely emerald rings. When I was there I saw the most beautiful amazing emerald and diamond ring in platinum. I would have bought it if I liked silver coloured jewellery. It was about £600 and the diamonds were massive and the emerald was lovely. Proper bargain!
  • Many Congratulations! I too would suggest a second hand/antique ring.

I'd suggest buying the stones and having the ring made for you - it'll be unique and much better value for money.

Another option is to buy inexpensive second hand or antique and have it remade.

Personally, I love antique jewellery, and there are some fantastic rings out there.

Lastly, I was working in South Africa last year and nearly bought some second hand diamond earing's - they would have cost £700 - my local jeweller friend told me they would have had a value of £5000 here if they were as described! (Which I would have checked). And to think I didn't buy them cos I thought I wouldn't wear them enough
  • Mr Biker got me a gorgeous white gold and diamond ring from an ebay shop - the jeweller was from birmingham and it cost a 1/3 of what it's been valued at. give that a go?
  • We designed our ring ourselves with amazon.com (its under jewelerry i think, and design your own engagement ring)

You set your budget, then look through a list of diamonds - you buy the diamond by itself, depending on what size, cut, clarity all of those, it gives you full details.

Then you choose the ring setting, shape of ring, size, colour of band, design, etc.

You can also choose some settings with extra gemstones.

My diamond with 2 sapphire (very dark and beautiful, quite unlike what I would have gotten in the UK) set in white gold ring cost $1000 was shipped very carefully and insured. I valued it at a jeweller in the UK and for my home insurance it was valued at £1500 - which is I think is almost $2700 or so!

The whole process was very rewarding for us, I loved choosing my own diamond and seeing all the details about it, and then the setting. It is not a complete "design your own", as you are choosing from a few hundred pre-designed settings but you do get to choose the diamond and details so I think it was pretty unique.
