Amsterdam is good for cheap diamonds & much closer & no import duty which technically you should pay if you buy from the US or Dubai. You could go for a day trip or a weekend & take GF with you so she could chose herself & get a nice romantic night into the bargain!;)
Good luck;) (and I'd love a man to buy me a £2.5K engagement ring as long as he could afford it!:D)Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
I might sound very materialistic but it was my dream of having a big ring. I would never dream of having my boyfriend getting into debt to buy me my dream ring but he insisted on doing it. We both have savings (and a small mortgage) so he wasn't getting into financial trouble for this. I would have accepted a £150 ring from Argos if that was what he could have afforded but I must say that I am happy with what I got. :j
Just out of curiosity - why would you be wary?0 -

You are joking right?!?!?
I would love a 2.5k ring, take no notice of OP.0 -
I'm dead jealous. My OH just bought me a £34.99 eternity ring from Argos!0

I thought I just wanted a small cheap ring, but he bought me a big expensive one as a surprise. I'm pleased he did that as I love it! It's over 3 years since we got engaged and I've married since, but I'm still guilty of having an admiring glance and making it sparkle in the light
Not sure of the best place to buy a diamond, but check out the 4 C's and get clued up on what makes a good stone. That's what hubby did to make sure he was getting a decent diamond. It also came with a certificate to show it's gradings too. Here I go again on my own....0 -

The OP could be a guy who earns 50k a year and can easily afford 2.5k so who said anything about getting into debt/overspending?:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin0

As long as it is affordable for the person, then it shouldn't be a problem. You're might be taking it for granted that spending 2.5K is overspending and not within the person's budget. It also depends on what the 'priorities' are - I'd much rather have a nice ring but then buy a car that is very basic because I am not into cars.0 -

I'd suggest going and doing some window shopping in Hatton Garden. Due to the competition of so many shops all next door to each other (and their close links with London and other diamond bourses), you should find prices that are much more reasonable than high street chains. Especially if you do your research about the 4Cs first, and have an idea of what you're looking for.
I got my OH (now fiancee) a beautiful marquise diamond engagement ring that I had made at a store in Hatton Garden, last November. I saved at least a third of what it would have cost elsewhere, and I got a much better quality stone for less money than I've seen for poorer quality elsewhere. I spent a lot of time looking in shop windows, then talking to people in the stores I liked the look of, then discussing prices. I must have made about 5 separate visits, whittling down the choices each time. I'm very happy with the result.
Be VERY wary of spending that kind of money on a ring you haven't seen yourself under a jeweller's loup. And I'd recommend getting the stone certificated by the GIA or another respected diamond certification specialist, as it makes insuring the ring easier.0
