Hope you don't mind me saying this but I would be wary of a man giving me a £2.5k engagement ring. I'd rather have a £150 one from Argos and save the rest for the future.

I'm with you. Mine cost under £100 is beautiful and means the world to me.

And I've always thought that my £600 engagement ring was expensive! My 'rock' is pretty big I think, & I am always getting lovely comments from people, so I can only imagine that these ladies will need a crane of some sort to lift their hands once the ring is in place !!! lol

Obviously the above posters earn a lot or as per ringo have the money put aside, but IMO I would rather the money be put towards a dream wedding, honeymoon, house, car, etc etc. But hey, if you can afford a 2.5k or 5k ring, then you can probably afford the above also!
:D I am in the future you know...

if you're buying in this country then buying antique or from auction is very good value. Bonhams have good auctions and the guide prices are pretty accurate although diamonds can go for more as they're the most popular. I was given a ring that cost less than a third of the valuation I've had on it. My engagemnt ring was second hand (not old enough to be antique) and was about 1/4 cheaper than if it had been new.

price isn't always about size - the quality of the diamond puts the price up so a rock the same size as yours could be worth thousands more because it's deemed to be flawless etc.

    Oh ok. :o

I think my diamond is flawless anyway! But then I am longsighted!

  • I am not sure if i am a bit too late in putting my views into this post but i shall gives some ideas across anyway...

I am not sure exactly what they have in stock and it constantly changes from week to week but have you tried 'Costco'? You will need to either be a member or know someone with a membership but they have some very nice jewellery from time to time

whilst i wouldn't be disappointed with an expensive sparkly >2k ring... i'd be paranoid for the rest of my life about losing it, or knocking the stone out or whatever! i'd want it cling filmed to my finger!

Personally I've never been able to tell the difference but it's when you get it under a scope and they check the colour and the carbon content or something... I'd love a big rock but my fingers are so small I had to have a 'delicate' stone instead :rotfl:
  • My engagement ring was bought from Ernest Jones. The ticket price was £325, we had £99 of vouchers to go towards it (from something we'd returned previously) and I got 30% off because I worked for them (Don't now though.). So we paid £158 for it. Had it valued with an independant valuer and it's value came back at £565 (but obviously it's worth far more than that to me.).
High street retailers aren't all that bad y'know... :)

Amsterdam is good for cheap diamonds & much closer & no import duty which technically you should pay if you buy from the US or Dubai. You could go for a day trip or a weekend & take GF with you so she could chose herself & get a nice romantic night into the bargain!;)

Good luck;) (and I'd love a man to buy me a £2.5K engagement ring as long as he could afford it!:D)

Fab idea, when I was in Amsterdam we went to a diamond factory to see them being made so you can even make a day of it and watch your stone being cut and set yourself before taking it home :) Very romantic I think :D
