My husband and I picked my engagement ring whilst we were on holiday in Greece about 10 years ago. It cost around 35.00 but it is unique and no-one has anything quite like it. The money saved on not buying an expensive status symbol actually paid for the 2 week holiday - memories of a lovely holiday AND a unique ring - what a lucky girl I am! On another note my friend has had about 3 different engagement rings from her husband - she saw one she liked and changed it - all were quite cheap but they were both happy and now she has 3 to swop and change when she gets bored with the one she has (Rings, not husbands!)

I'm so glad to see that there are other people out there who are not obsessed with the size/value of the engagement ring, for a long time I'd thought I was the only one. We were skint when we got engaged, about eight years ago, and (unromantic as it sounds) we both contributed to the ring. It wasn't particularly expensive, and its not big, but then I don't like wearing jewellery so what would I have wanted a big rock for anyway? It suited what I wanted. I still love it now, and I still love my husband, whilst I have seen many people with all the flashy rings in the world but a broken marriage behind them. I know which I would rather have......

And on that subject, don't start me on the subject of competitive honeymoons, they make me want to scream.....

Oh thank goodness I'm not competitive about honeymoons. I didn't even know that happens. With a plastic engagement ring and most of my honeymoon spent in hospital, I'd lose every time.:rotfl: It obviously doesn't matter to us though cos we have a great time. And somehow managed to have a good honeymoon too!

Honeymoons have definetely gone grander. I spent mine in Majorca (20 years ago). Last minute deal, don't know where you are going till you get there, I think we paid £224 for both of us for 10 days. Had a fab apartment rated 4* overlooking the pool. We were very skint though and ate spag bol most nights as it was cheap in a nearby restaurant. We had to save our money to pay for a new kitchen and CH in our house as we didn't have a kitchen at all and it was going to be a cold winter with just 1 gas fire.

We spent our honeymoon in a YOUTH HOSTEL in the Lake District. Separate sex dormitories and lights out at 11p.m. After buying a house There was not a penny left. Good job it was spring and warm out.

Just t okeep you updated guys. I went out an brought a token ring. Brought a swarovski ring for about £50. Booked int our favouite hotel in windermere called the "Lakeside". On the sunday I said we should go and try the view point on the hill on the other side of the lake, that we always said we would. Parked up in the car park near the start of the short walk.

It took about 15 minutes to get to the top. Spotted a nice grass spot with a few rocks to sit on with the view of the Lake Windermere and the Hotel Lakeside.

Then I said to her that it was wonderful that we had been seening each other fo 10 months now and that I had got her a little present. Got out the box and gave it to her. She openned the bo and found the ring inside with a bit of paper, which asked her if she would consider becoming my wife. She burst into tears and said yes!

I got the small bottle of champers out of the rucksack with plastic glassess and we had a drink. Phoned all our family and told them the news.

The following day we selected a suitable ring, which we had to order. She wanted a ring with Welsh gold, which we found. She is Welsh of course. The ring is ace and the other day I asked her to meet me on the hill side looking down on Ruthin to give her, her real Engagement Ring. Yet another glass of champers :)

We have fixed the date for October 29th

Thank you again all of you for your comments.

    Hi,

I am not sure if this is the best place to post, if it isn't can a moderator move this to the relevant forum area.

I recently split with my partner, although on "amicable" terms, I am still left with the dilemma on what to do with the engagement ring.

I purchased the ring from goldsmiths 16th December, for around £1950, plus i also bought (well, seemed like a good idea at the time) 5 year theft, polishing, whatever warranty, a snip at £270. So £2220 spent. considering I am in a bit of debt, i want to use this money (well, whatever i get from it) towards paying off the debt, as its sitting, gathering dust and I don't think most women like handme down engagement rings, unless it was a family heirloom.

anyway, I figured the first place to try was goldsmiths. I popped in there this afternoon to ask if they operate a buyback policy. The answer was no.

What i need to know is how do i go about getting this sold. I understand i wont get anywhere near what i paid for it, but i'd rather get something for it. anyone recommend the type of places. I dont think ebay would be wise, and pawning isnt something i'd do unless i was absolutely desperate.

any and all advice appreciated, and again apologies if its in the wrong forum area

    cheers

I don't know about now, but when i split from my ex about 9 yrs ago the pawnshop gave me a pittance for my engagement / wedding rings. Apparently they give you the value of the weight of gold as they melt them down as people don't want 2nd hand rings as its bad luck (unless of course antique). Sorry not much help i know ... try looking on ebay & see what others similar have sold for?
