Thats quite a big discount...but if thats your starting point thats up to you...I think what you have to consider more is where is your finishing point ...is it the ticket price of the ring or £400?

The other thing to consider is how much the ring is actually worth and thats difficult to determine without actually seeing it...if its a new ring then it will possibly be slightly easier to strike a deal on but I think the discount to aim for would be probably no more than 15%..
If its a ring that is second hand and was taken in as a pawned item then they will not release it for less than they actually paid the owner for it ...so this is where your lower offer may not work in your favour as it could be that they need to achieve a certain price in order to break even...

Perhaps the way to look at it is...is the ring worth the ticket price..and are you willing and able to pay that...if the answer is yes then by all means see if you can obtain a discount and if you do its a bonus...if there is no discount then hopefully you still have the funds to buy the lovely ring with which to propose...

It's ticket price is £485 and i am prepared to pay that yeah, by getting some of that off it though i can put that towards things in the future. I'm going to ring them up and see if i bring cash if that will alter the price, then i can bargain on the day as i'm getting it either way :p
  • Just want to make a quick mention for www . 77diamonds.com. I don't normally post on here, but felt like I should to help other blokes out. I don't trust people with 1 post giving reviews, so take it or leave it, but feel like I should mention 77.

I was a bit nervous about ordering from the site as there is very little mention of it on MSE and other diamond forums, but we received the ring yesterday and my fiance is over the moon with it. They delivered when they said they would, and the price was cheaper than anywhere we could find on the internet. I actually took a print out of the diamond and price to a local shop and they couldn't get anywhere near the price. I paid £1300 for a 0.5 Oval, E, SI1 set in platinum and the closest the shop could get was £1500 for a 0.47 Oval, E, SI2, and this was for a ring marked at £1900 in the window.

I very nearly didn't buy from 77 because I was wary of the lack of reviews, but so glad I did. Hopefully this will ease the mind of a few people.

Edit: - Just noticed I've got 5 posts, not 1.

Sorry haven't read all of the thread since it's so long but does anyone have any idea where to start looking for a fairly pretty cheap as chips second hand engagement ring? I don't believe in stone mining as such due to all the impacts it has (on people and the environment) so I am looking for something second hand, and don't want to waste any of my (& OH's) money...googled second hand engagement rings and they're mostly in the thousands. What sort of place is likely to be selling cheaper ones please? I would like it to be good quality if poss as have had a stone fall out of a £50 ring before and don't want that to happen again!

For cheaper second hand jewelery, you are probably better looking in independant jewellers as they tend to carry both new and second hand stock. I would also look at antiques fairs, probably as expensive as online, but you might just find a bargain.

  • when i got engaged and married in may 2010 we got my engagement ring for £20 from the general rings section for women in argos, it doesn't look cheap and it still looks brand new. Our wedding rings cost us £30 each for a basic band in the mens section of argos and they don't look any different than the £200+ ones most people get and also if you loose or missplace them they are cheap to replace.

My ring is 1 carat diamond set in white gold, clarity is VVS2, colour I, bought it from e-bay for £350 (only bidder, auction ended at 4am and mis-spelling in title) and just had it valued by an independent jeweller for over £2k!!! We got a valuation cert with the ring from a reputable jeweller but just wanted to make sure. There are some SERIOUS bargains out there, it needn't cost the earth :-)

My engagement ring was from 77 too - we bought from there after a colleague of OH recommended them. I have since also recommended them to another friend. Fantastic service in both transactions, and I LOVE my engagement ring - could never have afforded it from a high st shop.

Can I ask what the spelling mistake was? Please feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it on the board.

if you want to have a punt on the ebay mis spelling track then usually the most commonly used are mis spelling of carat and diamond....so try carrot or dimand....or combinations of those...
