I absolutely love anything antique and art deco is fantastic...the old cut diamond is a stunner in my opinion ,its the older version of what they term the brilliant cut nowadays...the way that the old cut shimmers especially in candlelight or catches the sun is quite special...so in my opinion if yoU want lots of sparkle then thats the way to go...other cuts such as emerald cut will still shine and produce a "flash" but you dont tend to get a multi faceted sparkle...
Do go and visit somewhere selling old jewellery if only to see the array on offer and to compare them with new prices...sometimes the settings may be a little worn but the quality can be really good... modern cutting is very good also but there is something about the way older diamonds were cut that can give them the edge over their modern counterparts...when compared like for like you would find the price of todays ring to far exceed what you pay for the antique ring.

The cut is very important as thats what really gives the diamond its intensity and depth
Although as I said earlier...most antique jewellery wont come with its own certification so it really is a case of go with what you personally like...
I have one diamond that is quite a way down the colour scale but is very high on its cut and clarity...consequently it appears slightly yellow in colour... not to everyones taste but to me that only adds to its charm!

With a .30/D/IF/Hearts and arrows (I'm assuming that since on this thread this sounds like the best it's equivalent to excellent) for £1672.52.
Still not convinced about buying online though so it looks like I'd be paying about £650 - 700 more on the high street for something similar depending on my haggling ability, less a bit for it only being .30 (Ring 2 is .31) but guessing this wouldn't make a massive difference.
About a 35% mark up - is this about standard for high street prices?
Hi Chris,
I've recently bought a .30DIF from a relatively new online company called brillian.co.uk. I was very hesitant about buying online but highstreet prices were just so much more expensive. Brillian has a showroom in Hatton Garden I called the to book an appointment on 020 3441 1895, I was able to pick my diamond and the setting, the price was great and the service was really good.
give them a try

Thank you for admiring my perseverance, I don't think it's called SPAM, I've recently bought from them and I'm very happy. I don't think it's very nice of you to call me out like that either...0

Hi LEJC,
I just wanted to thank you again for your help. We've bought a ring that we've scrimped, saved and sold a mass of stuff on ebay stuff for :-))))
From ebay, from a dealer with excellent feedback for thousands of transactions.
The ring has arrived and it is stunning.

I missed a good bargain (in my eyes) H samual had this ring on offer from £1000 to £500, 18carrot white gold .5 carrot ring.

Now it's discontinued.
Can anyone help me find a ring similar for around £500 ish.
Thanks

The ring has arrived and it is stunning. It's from around 1900-1910, French, and has a swirl of small diamonds and a slightly bigger one in the centre.
It was advertised at £850 and we got it for £700.
We are delighted.

On the face of it that does seem to be a good deal however its probably not the only deal out there...but if thats gone then you need to indeed find something else...there are rings around for that price but it really depends on the heritage of the ring and what your specifics are
There are online retailers that you could have a look at...they sell at below the high street price as they can buy in bulk and have few or no high street outlets
There is the smaller independant jeweller who will possibly have a selection of pre owned rings which may match you requirements...all will look like new as they will have been repolished...but reperesent good value for money as you do not pay VAT on second hand jewellery
There is the option of ebay...good if you know what you are after but its best to stick to a seller with good feedback...you need to do your research ...but again there are some very good examples that you can pick up there
You could try a jewellery quarter....such as birmingham...hatton gardens in london or the lanes in brighton...again all will have rings around your budget
A final option is to go to a high street jeweller and see what they have in a sale...similar to the way you found your original ring...they do have sales frequently....high street can be expensive but if you find the ring you want there then its been worth it...
It is always good to see the ring in the flesh as many of the stock photos created for online retailers are greatly magnified and so the actual ring may not seem as robust or large once you actually see it....
Also if you do decide to buy online check quidco for cashback....h samuels for example are currently offering 12.5% cashback and there does seem to still be a sale online for them at the moment...whilst there is nothing matching your spec exactly there may be something you would consider as an alternative.
The price of jewellery has really risen in the last year gold in particular is at an all time high so there are less deals to be got...again though a polite is that your best price or what discount can you offer for cash will usually bring the price down by about 10%
Diamonds come in all clarities and specifications....its perfectly possible to get a .5 c ring for your budget...you may not have the top rated clarity or colour but there will definately be a sparkle to the stone....go out and have a look further than h Samuels, and I am sure that by exploring other options and widening your search you will find the ring with which to propose....frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
