Just mentioned to OH about reclaiming his bank charges (not much...probably less than £150 ish)........and..................he isn't interested!!!!

Likened it to smokers sueing the tobacco companies..........'you sign up with them knowing what the charges are etc etc....blah.........'

I might do it for him anyway and if he gets any cash back I'll have it seeing as he won't make the effort!!:D

    Wow

Think I shall try it as well with bank and credit cards. One question though pse: Do you need old statements (bankk and credit cards) to back it up? Hope not!

Hi there and congratulations to Mr P on getting money back from the bank!!

Is there an easy way to get started on reclaiming the charges? is it a case of writing to them and finding out what is actually owed first?

  • I know of 2 £30 charges that my son has had within the past 12 month totalling to £60, can I claim these back for him, what is the letter I send, these charges were for paying bills when he had gone over his overdraft. I wasn't going to tell him so it would be a nice supprize if he got them back instead of raising his hope, is there a chance he would get them back??

Oooh - lots of questions.. basically - I sent my letter off exactly one week ago, and recieved my 'Secure Message' to my bank account this afternoon. I claimed for every charge - from un-authorised overdrafts, to bounced cheques. They even refunded me for some charges I had missed! It really did shock me how easy it all was. As smile is an online bank all my statements are in my online account so i just printed and trawled through them. If your account isn't an online account, you can request from the bank, under the DPA, a list of all charges applied to your account, for a fee of £10. Some people have actually had refunds by just requesting the list of charges.

I would IMPLORE anyone who has been charged.. \even if its just £30 in the past 6 years to claim it back it will show banks they really can't carry on this way.

I hope this helps some peeps.

Remember you can claim for accounts that are closed, or even if YOU are the blame for the charges.. Now go and get out your statements and write off to your banks.

I got my £30 back, but HSBC said it was a gesture of goodwill and they didn't believe they were wrong to charge me

I would be interested in attempting to claim back excess charges from my old bank and various credit cards, however, we are in a debt management plan with Payplan and so was wondering if it would be still possible to do so? Reason being, I would be claiming back for charges from institutions we currently owe money to.

    Cheers emilykat.

I was just wondering, if I was to attempt to claim the charges back from my bank, could they demand immediate repayment of my overdraft and inform me that they are going to close the account, I do have savings with this on-line bank also, I could remove the savings before attempting to reclaim my charges, the charges don't amount to much £100 approx, (I was on holiday and no access to a computer to transfer monies between jars).

Many thanks in anticipation for any replies to this question.
