edinburgher wrote: »Best of luck with that, something I'll be considering myself in the new year. Who are you going to see?
Some guys called NextStep. I just Googled 'careers appoointments' and it was the nearest I could find. They might be pants, but I'll let you know when I've seen them.
Have woke up this morning with a streaming cold. Have that horrible, horrible bunged up feeling. Got to get ready for careers appointment and then put some money in the bank (:j). Better get to it as I don't have much time left, but this has helped me wake up a bit. Have a nice day, one and all. :beer:Please call me 'Pickle'

Doesn't feel that way.
Careers appointment was just an introductory interview. I have another one in two weeks, but I'm not holding out great hopes: it seems to be about as pants as they were at school, but I'll keep going in the hope that maybe they might be able to help me.
Actually, maybe the problem is not that, maybe it's more me not quite knowing what I'm aiming for. I want to have a creative job but the problem is that the my skillset is not right for these jobs. I also need to get something new in the meantime with better pay and more regular hours, which means that I can work on those aims in the medium term, but that begs the question: what do I do with myself now?
Ideally I would like to get a job that I quite like in the meantime so that if the above aspirations never happen, at least I will have a job I enjoy. I want to create things and help people in life, and making money holds little truck with me: I seem to be a pretty good salesperson, but I have no desire to sit in an office making money as it seems like a waste of a life to me. I know that's not necessarily realistic (or at least it is not for the moment), but it's basically the last thing I would like to do, although perhaps I will have little choice in the meantime, at least. I'm great with people, though, and always want jobs based on people.
I have applied for work experience at a fairly prestigious place round here and was rejected. Instinct tells me that all my research capabilities would have scored me well, but that the lack of overall experience would have been against me. I feel that I might have the same problems in applying for actual jobs, but I'm going to apply to a large media outlet not far from here and see where that gets me.
But I need money. And now. I need something else inbetween.
At this point any advice would be gratefully received. Answers on a post[STRIKE]card[/STRIKE], please! Please call me 'Pickle'

Pickle, wish I had some careers advice.
You are clearly qualified to 'be' in the public eye. All I can say is keep following it up, every submission, if you don't get a response - ask why. If it's meant to be they'll snap you up for your sheer determination.
BBC sounds good.DC.

Cheers, DC. It's just very., very hard to get in. Even to get work experience somewhere like that they already want you to have had a lot of work experience elsewhere. I guess it's their way of weeding out the wheat from the chaff. If I was trying to get into this industry while I was still a student it would be OK as I could afford to do unpaid work experience and have the time and money to throw at it, but working full0time to earn a living is going to make it harder.
OK, so stop whingeing and get on with it.
On a positive note I rang a vaguely local newspaper on Friday and asked about the chances of work experience. They said to send my CV along. I will get that sorted and sent it either today of tomorrow. It might just lead somewhere. :T
Oh, and on an unrelated note, I went through my finances again esterday. Due to an unexpected £30 deposit for the next nail course and a birthday meal I have to attend, chances are that I will have to dip into my overdraft/put it on my CC. I was really hoping to avoid doing either this month, and I will keep it reigned in as tightly as possible.
Also, have MOT and insurance renewal due at the end of June, which will be fun as it will mean about another £500 to be found. On the positive side, my paypacket should be fairly hefty (realtively speaking) next month. I'll have to be careful with that a well.
OK, gotta go as I need to be in work for 11. Thanks for saying what you did DC as it makes me feel better and as though I'm not barking up entirely the wrong tree. Please call me 'Pickle'

I'm thinking BBC will mean a blanket of possibilities, ie radio, online, journalism in all formats. So really plenty of opportunities, should you apply to the more than one media ? IYSWIM?DC.
