Funnily enough, I've never known anybody else call them 'Specials' except my nan, dad and myself - BUT, although we lived in St.Helens (Lancs) my nan's family originated from Ireland VIA Yorkshire - so maybe they got it from there.
Our local chippy does them now and calls them 'scallops' as well.
yep a st helens girl here (27 yrs old) and they are called specials!! i just phoned home to see if i could have chips and egg for tea, to no avail, steak baguettes instead!!Married my amazing hubby on 8th September 2012 :j:j0 -
Mmmmmm egg and chips but the yolk definitely has to be runny and absolutely NO sauce, just lots of salt and vinegar. A chip butty is a must as long as the bread has loads of butter on it so it is oozing out as you eat.
We need to buy a new non-stick pan, so no fried eggs in this house at the mo!!0 -
We used to have egg and chips every Saturday when I was a kid.....double egg and chips for a treat.
Sometimes Mum would use her crinkle cutter on the potatoes to make fancy chips too. Those were the days....stuff the oven chips we eat now.:rotfl:
*drool*
Edit: A tin of chopped ham and pork was good with homemade chips too.Herman - MP for all!0 -

We always called these "fritters", funnily enough we never qualified it with the word "potato" in front, if you were told you were having fritters it was always potato fritters. I'm originally from Sunderland and everyone I knew called them the same.
They are super filling and I have to say when my kids were younger I have used them to make the last potato feed the whole family0 -
this takes me back - we called the potatoes in batter 'scallops' too - and I was born and lived all my life in south wales valleys - brought up proper in a 'tidy' home as my mam would say..........tidy in this context meant clean and respectable!
I still do egg and chips for OH sometimes with ham or beans not both!
my OH does the eggs in chip pan after the chips been cooked - I have never got the hang of this and for some reason the eggs always end up crispy outside and rock hard inside (mortal sin to OH who manages to get them crisp on edges and perfectly runny inside).
either red or brown sauce is acceptable
real butter and WHITE bread - wholemeal is NOT allowed
ohhhhhhhhhhhh right egg and chips it is for supper now.0 -
I have no potatoes or chip pan, but was going to use the leftover champ to make potato bread, fried eggs and beans and fried ham tonight - inspired by this thread kind of. How do i cook the ham? It is hock ham. Do i just fry it in butter/oil? I've never fried ham before, and also have never eaten Spam - i don't think it's for me:oA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Gosh I never knew the food you ate... when you ate it... and what you called it pigeon holed you in a 'class'
I'm 26 and egg and chips was a regular for us ... couple of times a month and we call it 'tea' ... however I remember having to wait until about 7 for tea as dad would always work late ... I remember when playing out when younger all my friends running in for tea at 5.30 and back out to play before I had mine ... they used to joke that I was going in for breakfast as they thought I was going in too late for tea!
Those were the days .... egg and chips ... nyom nyom

hi zippy chick
you say you have a hock ham? if its the hock ham i am thinking of then I normally cook it by boiling it for about 20 mins per pound plus 30 mins over . but - we have different names for cuts of meat here sometimes. I have never tried frying it - let us know how it turns out . oh and am not sure what champ is - is it potato and cabbage? i usually just make little cakes with it then fry both sides. thats delish too!!!0 -
lol burp - i am talking bout over 50 years ago - and yes the food you ate the way you spoke the house you lived in the job you did the school you went to - all defined your class. was working class then and still working class now - just have more 'toys' and own home - well will have when mortgage paid off (I dont think my parents knew what a mortgage was, everyone we knew rented)0
