Just as an aside, the truest indicator of class status in the 1970s to my recollection was that you were working class if and only if you had old copies of the Daily Mirror stuffed underneath the cushions of your sofa.0

:rotfl:we had newspapers under the sagging cushions of our sofa, but they were The Guardian. Obviously I was middle class after all!0 -

OMG ! Its been yonks since I had egg and chips ( about as working class and northern as you can get here !! )Think the nearest I have got is potato wedges and frittata ......
We used to have beans too ,so that must have made us even more common than the common folk:rotfl:
We used to have beans and chips as a meal in itself, never beans with egg and chips you must have been very posh LOL;)0 -
Actually another staple was beans on toast of course, usually for lunch, also with lots of butter on the toast.
Quite often with half a curry OXO in the beans for a bit of zing.0 -
we used to have egg and chips a lot until my stepdaughter came to live with us - she doesn't like eggs and had beans instead! The cost of the meal then rocketed because, of course, everyone else wanted beans as well. And her mum always accuses me of being too posh LOLEat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Can I just put in a word for Remoska chips? Of course they're not as perfect as chips deep fried in lard, but they're pretty fantastic. Cut as thick as you like, put in Remoska pan, slosh over some oil, shake them about and cook for as long as it takes. A million times nicer than oven chips, in my humble opinion, but less likely to start a fire. And, yes, I have had a chip pan fire, many years ago, and I still feel ill at the memory of it.... Luckily no one was hurt, but it really frightened me and I didn't make chips for years, until I got my Remoska.
Fry an egg, put loads of real butter (preferably not spreadable - it goes too oily when it makes contact with the chips) on your bread, and make a hog of yourself....0 -
