    Hello all :D

Well I've not been around too much lately, and each time I log on, by the time I've replied to PMs, it's been time to get off again

I have been doing some OS ...........gardening, grandchildren, my old folks lunch club, family cooking etc. A substantial part of my time has also been spent trying to finalize the winding up of my Dad's estate. I want it all finished but there's a finality that makes me a bit tearful and emotional. The reality that they're both gone  Totally illogical, but there we go :o 400 mile round trips each time take their toll, but hopefully only one more to go. Then I can get on with the rest of my life :D

I'm so out of touch with what's happening I'll just send congrats to those celebrating, and hugs for those sad, poorly or in need.

Off to try and make sense of some of the comments I've read today :rotfl:CM x

    Hello!
I made two pots of soup (appropriate for my username), spicy parsnip and leek & potato, and wickedly bought a loaf of olive ciabatta to have with a bowl this evening (and bought olives so I can make the next loaf myself).
The rhubarb jam is on the way, fruit all chopped and soaking in the sugar ready to be jammed tomorrow with some crystallised ginger to give it a little kick.

    evening all!

I havent read the thread yet - been out all day to The Elan Valley - a beautiful valley of reservoirs in Wales. We also picked up my 'new' laptop that we bought from Ebay so I'm just testing it out - seems strange after the usual PC.

DS2s job seemed to go well yesterday, he'll find out in the week if they want him back - fingers crossed they do because he seemed to enjoy it.

The car is all ready for tomorrows carboot so need an early night as we'll need to be up early.

DS1 and his partner are here to visit and they've bought their Wii and want me to have a go - I think that they think it'll be funny:rolleyes::D

I hope you've all had a lovely day, off to catch up now x

    Evening all,

Thought I'd join your thread today :D

Weather is awful here today really grey and wet

Bug hugs to all not feeling well.

Well we've been shopping this morning for DS school shoes......he starts primary school on the 7th Sept. I'm really not looking forward to it I can't believe how quickly he's growing up its heart breaking

Then we went to visit the inlaws and after that DH and DS went to the fair for an hour while I filled in a job app. I've applied for so many jobs in the last 4 months and had no replies its started to knock my confidence a bit.

Not really done anything OS style today which isn't good.

just off to buy a slanket off ebay as a christmas present for a relative.
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

    Spicy parsnip?
Chop one onion and put in pan with about a tablespoon of oil or a knob of butter/marg. Put on a low heat with the lid on the pan. check every few minutes and give a stir. The steam generated keeps the onions moist but they will begin to caramelise and so a soft brown (not crunchy, just soft).
Add spices, I use ground cumin (lots because I like it), coriander, cardomoms if you have them, celery salt (ditto) and a pinch of chilli powder (not much - I work on the principle that I can always add more, but I can't get rid of it if I add too much).
Let the spices brown off with the onions.
Chop 2 parsnips and one carrot, add to pan and cover again.
After 5 minutes (watch because parsnips go soft more quickly than carrots) add enough veg stock or chicken stock to cover all the veg.

Simmer until cooked... 20-30 mins. You can mash it for a chunkier soup of blend for a smooth one.

Serve with crusty bread and if it's a bit too spicy, a spoonful of natural yoghurt will calm it down a bit.

If you are dieting (like me) then just wipe the pan round with an old butter wrapper or one up-tipping of the oil bottle onto kitchen paper... or don't use any at all.

It's lovely, the parsnips are slightly sweet so it a very more-ish bowlful.

Thanks Soupfan, I'm making a load of soups for OH's packed lunches and I bought some parsnips today as they were on offer... perfect! Also bought some corn on the cob as it was on offer so will be making corn chowder, and tomatoes that were on offer to make tomato soup. Much more interesting than boring sandwiches!

Take them on at bowling, taplady. In my ( OK limited) experience us females seem to do rather well at it ;) At least DIL, nieces and me certainly do :D And it's great fun!
Good luck to DS2, hope they want him back.

Thanks for the recipe, I have all of the ingredients needed, how lucky is that? ( I also love cumin, lots of it)
Like you, I also add extra spices/condiments when needed as I can't remove them once cooked.

    Many thanks, Beth.
