Is Dh registered blind? If not criteria for being registerd blind is as follows-
The ophthalmologist uses a combination of both your visual acuity and your field of vision to judge whether you are eligible to be registered, and at which level. If you have a good visual acuity, you will usually have had to have lost a large part of your visual field to be registered as severely sight impaired (blind) or sight impaired (partially sighted).
Alternatively, if you have all your visual field, you will usually have to have a very poor visual acuity to be registered as severely sight impaired (blind) or sight impaired (partially sighted).
Generally, to be registered as severely sight impaired (blind), your sight has to fall into one of the following categories:
    • visual acuity of less than 3 / 60 with a full visual field
    • visual acuity between 3 / 60 and 6 / 60 with a severe reduction of field of vision, such as tunnel vision
    • visual acuity of 6 / 60 or above but with a very reduced field of vision, especially if a lot of sight is missing in the lower part of the field.
To be registered as sight impaired (partially sighted) your sight has to fall into one of the following categories:
    • visual acuity of 3 / 60 to 6 / 60 with a full field of vision
    • visual acuity of up to 6 / 24 with a moderate reduction of field of vision or with a central part of vision that is cloudy or blurry
    • visual acuity of up to 6 / 18 if a large part of your field of vision, for example a whole half of your vision, is missing or a lot of your peripheral vision is missing.
You would need to be referred to an ophthamolgist via an optician. I think think the tax allowance is only if you are registered blind rather than partially sighted.

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/blind-person-allow.htm. How tax allowance works.

Well that was very informative 'Fuzz. Thanks for giving me the impetus to research that- it is something I should know really!
  • I forgot you were a creepy eye lady:p Thanks:D:D

DH has Congenital Glaucoma and if he was registered he'd be classed as partially sighted I think!
He hasn't been referred by his specialist as his Dr knows how DH feels about being referred to as having a 'disability' Coz he's had it his whole life DH knows no different and therefore in his mind he's 'normal' even when his Mum refers to his SN teacher from school he gets in a right huff, and says she was a teaching assistant helping ALL children:rotfl:

His blindness comes in useful though, if I'm pulling faces at him I don't have to do it behind his back....just have to step to the right of him:rotfl::rotfl:

Bummer with the congenital glaucoma :( If he would be classed as partially sighted- think it would come under

visual acuity of up to 6 / 18 if a large part of your field of vision, for example a whole half of your vision, is missing or a lot of your peripheral vision is missing.

I don't think he would get the allowance :(, but it depends how much of a field loss (areas he can't see) he has. He should really find out.. it's not a diasability until he chooses to let it be, but he may as well get some compensation for the probs if he can! boys, honestly!

Thats what I told him, men are stoopid!
I know his vision in his left eye is pretty much fine, it's his right eyes thats stuffed, he can only see out of the top right corner of his eye IYSWIM thats the way he describes it anyway. He has one of those black triangle shaped pressure regulaters too.... really funky if you look him straight in the eyes, it freaks my niece out no end:rotfl::rotfl: We used to threaten her with his eye when she was a toddler and being naughty:rotfl::rotfl:

Anyway, will have to get the last report from his specialist and see if we can get it......would be great if we can:D

I think that if his other eye is 'pretty much ok' then they won't class it as partially sighted. I think... If it was both eyes then it would be a severe field defect and probably class as being 'blind' rather than partially sighted. Is he allowed to drive at all?
  • yes he can drive(was a major achievement for him:D) but he has to have yearly reviews/tests, plus he has to 'over compensate' when looking over his shoulder, luckily we found a driving instructor that had experience teaching partially sighted people.

Will give HMRC a call I think once we can get hold of his records, doesn't hurt to ask:)
