Don't buy one of the newer ones. They're puny in comparison. I know because that's what I did.

If I want to knead bread I can walk away and leave the A701A to do its thing for 5 minutes. The newer ones are mainly plastic, so if you leave it alone it will walk across the worktop!! I have to stay and hold it. The speed dial shakes around a bit on the newer ones, too. All in all, it feels way too flimsy to me, after the more sturdy A701A.

Actually I've gone back to the A701A - I found one at a boot sale and am using that. The newer model is up in the loft gathering dust!!

The A701A has a larger range of attachments than the other models and is easy to fix if it beaks (with spares readily available). Personally, I'd suggest you keep your older, sturdier model.
  • Oh well, if it's only about 40 years old :D

Seriously, thanks for all the comments. There is no way the A701A could ever walk anywhere. Solid metal and heavy. More MSE to keep this one going anyway.

I have the KMC560. It has a metal body and metal gears and it is robust. It has a 1000w motor.

I think the newest version of this is the KMC570, and the only difference I can tell, is that it comes with a new improved liquidiser jug.
  • The Kmix is solid metal too, the only plastic bit is the splash cover. It's a very very heavy bit of kit and doesn't walk anywhere.

My Mum has the A701A, which is older than me, and my one does compare favourably with hers. She's used her almost weekly since she bought it new, and it's never (touch wood!) broke down or been serviced.

My parents are just about to downsize into a smaller home and she's thinking about getting rid of her A701. I can't let her give it to a charity shop as there are too many happy childhood memories attached to it (daft I know but I "helped" her make a lot of Christmas cakes, fairy cakes etc from a very early age) so I'm thinking about shipping it over to England and keeping it, and maybe getting rid of my KM700 or stashing it in the loft. She's had it since about 1970 and it's still as good as the day she bought it.

I know exactly where you're coming from. :) I've always hankered after a chef, mostly because of the good memories it conjures up. But after being married over 20 years I decided to treat myself to one, 2-3 years ago. Wish i'd done it ages ago though, but when the children were little there was always something else that took priority!

I have my mums old Kenwood A701a mixer and am glad I found this site and have read all of this thread. Although there has been no posts this year ,I was hoping that some one could help me . I am looking on ebay for a glass liquidiser to chop up ice . does anyone know if one from a major mixer will fit mine . Thanks .

Also I have read somewhere that the cable on the older models is not safe , apparently the rubber around the wires inside the cable can cause problems and will need replacing . is this easy to do myself ? does anyone have a service manual showing how to do this ? or know of any other sites that has vidios pictures re repairs ? ( other than the ones already quoted in this thread they have been very helpful thank you .

The new Chef attachments will fit your A700 - the design for the attachments hasn't changed.

I recently sold a mincer/grinder attachment to someone on MSE which I didn't need (it was an unwanted gift as I already had the attachment).

Just happened to notice this thread and it brought back memories.

I have my mother's A701 sitting in a cupboard. I bought some liver yesterday and I am going to make my own chopped liver, using the mincer attachment, like my mother used to.

I believe this machine is older than me, and I am 53.
