OS Daily Thread - Friday 28th August

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Tuesday 25th August! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning all!
Belated welcome2.gif to Minxz and Winniepoo!
Maitaine - someone probably answered your question but I just grate it and throw it in raw. It works fine and just melts into the sauce.
Lamewolf, PenPin and Nic1 - Hope you both feel better today

RosyRed - Really glad you had a great birthday
FairyE - So pleased the results were good at the hospital and that your risk of Downs has been decreased!

Hester - so sorry work is giving you a headache, hope it improves as you make more sense of the chaos they have left you!
tired mum - what a shock about your car you must feel really frustrated that you cannot do anything about it. Glad you had a good holiday though!
Molly - hope the guinea pig (and by extension) your son is OK

I had a nice evening last night. We had the in-laws over and they voted to have an Indian takeaway which saved on the cooking. I had the tandoori chicken and a shish kebab as I am not really keen on currys per se. We bought our naan bread and popadoms from the supermarket to save money. We spent a lot of the evening talking about allotments and gardening, it was super!

Have just eaten two huge nectarines as the entire punnet seems to have ripened all at the same time and I don't want them to spoil! They were so sweet and juicy it was a lovely way to start the day! The WM is on (and the tumbly as it's raining again) and the bread maker is nearly finished, so all is right with the world. Well it will be when Tris logs on anyway...

Spent a lot of yesterday afternoon reading my Delias Frugal food book that arrived, but managed to get a nap in too which my OH really needed. I had a very strange dream that I was on Strictly Come Dancing and having a whale of a time! I had the most amazing dress on... almost didn't want to wake up!

Hope you all have a great day - hugs.gif to those who need them.

Hi MSD and all who follow. Hope you are all well and happy.

Well, I'm back from seeing my gorgeous DGD2 and the rest of the family. My ten days was over far too quickly and I can't believe I'm back at home. The baby is truly truly scrumptious; she has lots of black hair and looks just like her mum. DS2 and DIL are on cloud nine and I was as soon as I saw her. I've had lots of cuddles and it was horrible having to leave them all behind. DIL is doing really well after what she went through, and DS2 is taking great care of them both. The rest of the family are all well and happy and we spent lots of quality time with them. I met three more nieces, who were born in my absence so it was a very 'girlie' time. We did a lot of bed-hopping, though. Two nights at friends before being 'evicted' because they had friends staying with them for their daughter's wedding; two nights in different hotels, one very posh one in the New Forest where the wedding party was staying, then two nights in Weston-super-Mare visiting my mum and my sister, then back to our friends for the rest of our stay. We've had a brilliant time with everyone and I was very sad to have to leave them all. We're aiming to go back every three months so I'm already planning our next trip. It was great to catch up with so many people and to know that they are all well and as healthy as can be. My main worry is one of my sisters who has several medical conditions but is at last being taken seriously by the doctors, so I hope she will soon be getting the treatment she needs. I want her to come out here to France and stay with us for as long as she can - the peace and quiet will do her the world of good.

Well, I haven't caught up with anyone's news on here so I hope you are all well and happy.

The change in the weather as we drove down through France yesterday was amazing. We had one and a half good days in the UK (luckily, the 'half' was the day of our friends' daughter's wedding), and we found it quite cold. When we arrived back at our house here, the sky was blue and the sun was beaming. I hope the UK gets some good weather before all the children are back at school.

I know the weather is not so good over there, and the traffic is as horrendous as I remember, but I would come back and live there tomorrow if I could. I'd put up with anything to be nearer to the family. I was reminded about how good the shops are, and how many bargains are to be had there, too. France has become pretty expensive compared to the UK. The utilities, rates, and so on are dearer in the UK but I reckon you get far more value for money in the shops in the UK, and far more choice, too.

Anyway, once I've finished unpacking and caught up with all the washing, I shall feel more settled. We are looking after our neighbours's mad dog until Sunday - not too easy because he's the sort that comes bounding up and leaps at you in greeting; he's knocked me over a few times so DH has to settle him down before I can get near him! He's soft and not in the least bit aggressive, but quite scary until he calms down. No doubt, he'll be taking us for a walk this evening!

Well, I already have the WM on. I did two loads while we were staying with my sister, but seem to have bought loads of washing back with us, so I think the WM will be on for most of the morning. I need to get the BM on in a minute, too.

Dinner will be chilli with rice. We've not had mince all the time we were away and I was starting to miss it!

Anyway, hope you all have a great day. See you later.

I know what you mean about living in the Euro zone. We've just moved back from Cyprus - and although the first 6 weeks here has been full of buying things that we'd missed and filling the cupboards and freezer, I noticed how far the money went.

After calculating that it was cheaper to get my shopping delivered than drive to the shops, I did my shopping on line yesterday - for the month - less than 150!!!! Not sure if this will be it - but I was amazed!

Anyway, today we're off to our house in Yorkshire. I'm taking up bread, milk, fruit and veg and also a casserole so that we not only save money, but time too. Will also be taking a packed lunch for us to eat rather than stopping in services!

Have to take the dogs which ensures that any left overs aren't left over! Just wish I could leave the childrens tantrums behind! Have a great bank holiday everyone - fingers crossed for sunny weather.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

    Morning.

Windy with cloud in Cornwall. Another crappy weather day is paradise.

Went to Plymouth on the train yesterday as I wanted to wander around the hoe and get a Captain Jasper burger. I settled for the half yard of saugage! 45.7cm long hot dog. Delicious! :D

Daughter got in a tizzy as her mock results were poor and that just emphasised what we were saying about too much bebo and other stuff. So things will change around here.

Not sure what to do today. Need to cut the grass, but it's just too wet. Perhaps the wind will dry it out some....
Certainly get a hair cut and then tomorrow it's work. I have to go to newquay for 3 days to help out with the Bank Holiday.

    Have a good one.....

    Cheers

    Morning everyone.

Kathy - your newest granddaughter sounds soooooo cute and cuddly. So glad you had a lovely time with the family.

Halight - have fun at the caravan and good luck with your appointment this afternoon

I am surprised to read that UK perhaps isn't as expensive as we think (well it FEELS expensive ;)) Or it is that Europe just don't do Poundshops as they're not as classy LOL!!
Mindee is coming today so not going to get much done at all except play play play! Hope the weather holds, been really lucky every time she's come we've been able to get in the garden (which her and DS love). I think DS has missed her as when we came back off hols he kept telling me she was coming to play!
H working late tonight so will have a spare portion of something from out of the freezer for tea. Started going through my meal plans as I haven't been sticking them them and I think I've been getting a little board. Found a great site for receipes http://allrecipes.co.uk/ as we really only eat chicken, bacon, sausage (and me and the kids eat a bit of beef) so I needed a few more receipes that didn't involve chicken LOL! Don't get me wrong I could eat it every day of the week but it would be fairly costly!!!
Did a good deed for the day yesterday. Was at the new Hobbycraft at my local retail park and I had to take DS outside for a quick loo break ;) I was just in time to see a lorry rip the wing mirror off someones car and continue driving round to the rear of the store. Nipped and got his licence plate and name of company and left a message on windscreen for driver giving details and my name and number should they need a witness. Lady owner rang me back last night delighted and over the moon that I had taken the time to do that. They can now trace the driver and get the very expensive repair (electric wing mirrors!) replaced at no cost to themselves :D

Anyway I've rambled on enough. Hugs to those that need them.
Have a good day OS or not.

  • Good morning everyone  Thank you for all your best wishes for DD yesterday. She did substantially better than expected, which made her decision what to do next even harder :o Eventually she decided on Leeds College of Art :T She has plans to be an illustrator, which I think must be fate, as the current Children's Laureate is an illustrator and author, and started off at the same college :j We went out to see Harry Potter and for a meal to celebrate HSstars.gif

    I've been Money Tipped!
    :hello:Good morning!

I have been missing in action for a while - making pots and pots of plum jam and chutney. Neighbours have been very generous! also been "flying" to sort out the house in time for our weekend visitors. We are having a barbecue to celebrate both dh and my birthdays, a good excuse to get family and friends together.

This morning we are off to our local ms centre for a natter and a cuppa and then must get to Costco for some meat, salad, beer etc., and any bargains we might just see while we are there. We need a new garden bench, anyone know of any good offers? Going to try Homebase and B & Q if we get time.

congrats to all those dd's and ds's who passed their exams and (((hugs))) to any who didn't get the results they wanted.

Right must get another cuppa first!

    Morning everyone :)

It's sunny and pretty still here with a chill to the air ... today is a very strange day, my Nan passed away this morning and its a mixed bag of emotions, pleased that she's no longer in pain and discomfort, sad that it ended that way and worried about how it's going to affect my mum who has been her main carer for 7 years. I'm now in a quandry as I've been without my car for a fortnight as couldn't afford MOT but it's booked in for this morning and I don't know if it's heartless to go and get it done. It means I have transport to go and visit family (although they are within walking distance pretty much) or if it's thoughtless to continue with a mundane task?
