I've never heard this before. AFAIK the same living together as a couple rules apply to TCs as do to other welfare benefits.

And just because you're sharing bills etc doesn't necessarily mean you're saving money - someone sharing a 2 bed flat in central London could easily have higher outgoings that someone living alone in a studio flat somewhere cheaper in the country.
I don't have the debating skills necessary to answer this question, even though I do have answers for it all ..... unless I write 3 volumes. So I will decline to pick up on any of these points except to say that in my posting I might have been unclear as I was listing the criteria for a single person's claim as I understand it, ignoring other types of claims. OP is trying to claim as a single person when they are [a] part of a couple and sharing a home

I can't resist responding again, I should be a grown-up and not take the bait but that's boring.

I DO NOT EXPECT THE STATE TO SUPPORT ME. Have you read a single thing I posted? I work, full time, but happen to earn a fairly low wage. I saw someone on TV last night who earned more than I do but gets working tax credit - I was just interested to see if I might be eligible, and then asked a RHETORICAL question about why my boyfriend should be "held against me" as it were :) since we are financially independent from each other.

Many years ago I had to claim unemployment benefit and will never claim anything again unless I absolutely have to, the thought of filling in the forms is enough to put me right off.

I think it would be naive to join finances before we are married or have children together - I have been in a relationship with joint finances before and though it was an amicable split, untangling the finances was tiresome and prolonged. Surely it is sensible to stay independent until a major commitment is made?

If a civil partnership were an option we might be more inclined to share finances, and if we had a child together of course my bf would support me.

To the stay-at-home mother who decided I was calling her a gold-digger, why so testy? Nowhere did I disparage mothers or wives (or husbands or fathers for that matter) for being financially supported by their other halves.

Oh, and it'd be really interesting to know how many of the people getting their knickers in a twist claim child benefit despite having healthy household incomes...

Those of you with "issues" may find the text in bold below informative - it's a sticky thread from the top of this board.
All I did was ask a question about why I would not be entitled to a benefit. I didn't ask about the rights and wrongs of it.
Nor did I ask for judgement on the way I choose to live my life or whether or not some randoms on a message board think my boyfriend is mean.

    Kisses!

"This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.

Of course we all know the benefits system is a mess

Whatever your political persuasion, we're all aware the benefits system is a mess. Whether its the malpayments of tax credits on one hand, benefit fraud on the other hand, or simply the fact that sometimes it doesn't pay to work - everyone has their grumble.

This board is here to help people with their money though..

Yet that isn't what this board is for. It's here to help people find out what they are entitled to under the current system, and to help them get it. Benefits do provide a lifeline for many, and this site is here to help people with their money, and not to judge. Of course, how to illegally defraud the benefits system shouldn't be discussed here, but ensuring you're getting your entitlement is exactly what its about.

Want to discuss the benefits system? Go to the discussion board

If you want to discuss the benefits system itself and issues around it, the appropriate place isn't here but the
Discussion Board and even there, please remember courtesy and not to make it personal about anyone. This site's prime purpose it to help people with their money and I will always act to protect that.

    Thanks for your co-operation

    Martin"
