Someone on another thread mentioned living in a mobile home(very modern) after they had finished paying their mortgage which would release the equity.
What about these adverts you see on TV where a company buys elderly peoples houses and allows them to stay there for the rest of their lives, could something like that be arranged for the PIL flat? wouldnt really be affecting them and would give you money to pay off the debts.0 -
First let me say that I agree with the sentiments of all the other posters. What your PIL are doing is despicable. However as a posted said earlier, there are two problems here your debt and their attitude. You can do nothing about the latter, but a lot about the former.
So here are a couple of pointers.
1) First of all find your latest statements from each lender. Next go to Word on your computer, and type a generic letter that you can add each lenders address to.
In the letter say something like.
"Dear X
With regard to the outstanding balance on our card (loan, mortgage etc). Due to my wifes illness, we are unable, at present, to continue paying the minimum monthly payment. We would therefore ask that you
1) freeze the interest on the outstanding balance and
2) accept the sum of £xx per month.(this to be the amount you can afford and still eat, heat the house etc)
Yours faithfully"
I am sure someone could improve on this but you get the general idea. And of course you will have to look at your income and expenditure before you can do this. There is not point offering to pay too much, if it leaves you with nothing to eat etc. You have to think of yourselves first. Most companies would rather have some payment than have to write off the whole debt.
But what ever payment you suggest you make, you have to stick to, hence why it has to be realistic.
Also are you getting all the benefits that you are entitled to? You were saying that you were too ill to work, so could you get Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance etc? Just wondering!
On a slightly lighter side, you mentioned earlier about finding some money to buy anchor butter, and I thought you might be intersted in the following information from Tesco
Anchor butter 250g 76p
Anchor Butter 500g £1.36
Tesco Value Butter 250g 53p
So a 23p saving if you bought the cheapest butter. But
Tesco Value Olive Spread 500g 67p (ie half the price of your butter for the same weight)
Tesco Value Sunflower Spread 500g 38p
Stork Margarine 250g 28p
Stork Margarine 1kg 85p
I am using this as an example of how you can cut back on your shopping bill. The sunflower 500g pack is 98p cheaper that the 500g pack of butter. Say you use one every 2 weeks, then that is £26 you would save each year on spread alone! And they do say sunflower spread is better for you too!
I am sure that there are other ways you can save, as well as restructure your debt. If you are currently on a repayment mortgage for your PIL residence, then you could change it to interest only. This would save you a lot of money I think, which you could throw at your other debts. In this way you would still get some benefit from their residence, and not rock the boat (though I would rock it so much it would capsize, but that is just me!).
The very best of luck with everything you do. You know the first step on the journey is always the hardest. Once you have done that, you will wonder why it took you so long to take that first step.
I suffer from depression and I would urge you to seek help. Luckily I do not have much debt to way me down, just other problems to depress me. If I had money worries too then I would definitely be a basket case by now.
sorry for the long post. ((((((HUGS)))))I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
