The money saving advice to all of you is to ensure your road tax expires in February. We have always endeavoured to do this - it's easy to move your expiry date by surrending your old road tax on the 28th (or 29th) February and taxing again from 1st March.

The benefit of February is that road tax almost always goes up, and you get a full year at the old rate. If it (exceptionally) goes down, you can surrender the 1 month old tax disc at the end of March and get the saving.

except if you have a car thats more enviromentally friendly as ours is, it went down

I realise this may not be the correct thread but given it is a grab it now i.e requires immediate action tommorrow to benefit perhaps it is !

In the recent budget the Car tax on entry level Co2 banded vehicles band B was reduced from £78 to £40 a year this includes Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 & Toyota Aygo that I know of others are listed here:

    http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/vedSearchResults.asp

If you purchased a car from a dealer prior to the budget it will have a Road Tax fund Licence of £78 this can be surrendered preferable tommorow as refunds are only per calender month and in my case I get back £39 in the post in a few weeks, I can at the same time re tax the car for £40 a year at the new rate.

The forms you need can be downloaded here:

See you in the cue at the post office Big Thanks to Gordon Brown

if everybody now has to pay the new fees, then surely they refund discs in the same way Not looking what you paid for it, but on what it costs now.

No, refunds are always based on the actual amount paid.

Well, it worked! Bemused woman at PO needed quite a lot of explanation as to WHY I was sending off old tax disc and re-taxing, but eventually understood.

And now I've logged in specially to thank zeberdee, and the thanks button has disappeared again! :p

It says on the DVLA website............

Due to recent budget changes, please note that your rate of Vehicle Excise Duty may vary from that shown on your V11 reminder. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

My car tax hasnt changed at all......£60.50 for 6 months , would of been nice if mine had gone down, due at the end of this month *sigh*

Since we're on the question of car tax, I have a 1.3 CDTi Corsa on 04 plate and according to log book, the emissions are 122g/km (km is right i think).

However, any car slightly newer than mine, i.e. 05 or 55 plate, with the SAME engine and spec but the emissions are quoted as 119g/km which is just inside the upto 120g/km tax band.

That means, the newer car tax is £50 for year where as its £110 on mine!!!!!

Is there anything I can do?
