Just use argos on the internet and check stock and reserve the one you want.

All that walking around shops no thanks not for me...

As janninew says you can usually get a good deal buying online but, whatever you are buying online, if you need it for 'this weekend' or must have it for a wedding/holiday/birthday next week etc you should buy from a website that offers a time guaranteed service especially considering the widespread mail worker strikes happening at the moment.

You should also a) check the despatch timescale offered by the website and b) what service their standard delivery is.

Some websites seem to take days to process an order so even if they offer a next day delivery service you end up waiting for days before it's despatched.

Remember first class and second class post are not time guaranteed - iirc RM aim to deliver them in 1 working day and 3 working days respectively but delays can and do occur in the post even when there are no mail strikes. Also Recorded Delivery is no faster or secure than ordinary first or second class post.

    It is prime camera season at the moment as vyle rightly says but if you buy anything online;
    • Buy in plenty of time before the event you need the item for
    • Check carefully what you are buying and what the right accessories you might need/want are (it's sensible to only buy accessories once you have received and tested and are happy with the main device)
    • test the goods before you go on holiday. If a camera you buy is faulty and you don't realise it until you are on holiday then you can return the camera for a refund but if you bought accessories elsewhere you may not be able to return them under DSR if you can't notify the seller within 7 days of their receipt.

I've just tried the three local Argos stores and no one has any stock of anything, so Argos is out.

Tried Tesco direct and they have some very limited stock so I might have to go with them although I can't get any of my first choices. For people looking at very cheap cameras though they do have stock of the very cheap ones in.

The reason I left it so late is that this was a vanity purchase, I don't actually need it as I have two others but i wanted a very small one that would fit in my handbag. I prefer to actually have the cash in hand before I buy (I'm old fashioned) and suddenly two days ago I sold something on ebay for much more than I had expected so knew I could afford the camera.

Look on Amazon, their prices always seem very competitive as compared with the highstreet.

Asda is really good for cameras, I bought my 'handbag' Sanyo 10mp one from there for £45 (half price). They always have good deals and quite good stock levels :-) (We have a panasonic lumix? too for the good photos)

I did look on Amazon but the only thing that put me off was that I have found them very slow in the past unless you pay extra for an enhanced delivery service, and that made them slightly dearer than the high Street. I'm going to take another look though as a back up if I can't get anything else today.

Tried Asda first as someone else had told me they did some good cameras. My local Asda had one single camera in stock a fairly basic level entry camera but quite expensive.

Maybe it is just this bit of London that has problems, I might try expanding my Argos search a bit further afield and maybe do some charity shop shopping as well for books and make a day of it.

something under £80 won't take very good pictures, really, anyway. Don't bother about how many megapixels the camera has, either. Unless youre printing an a1 sized poster, you'll likely never see more than 6mp. It's the lens and sensor that makes the difference. Get a low end canon or panasonic and you can't go wrong. yes, theyre more expensive, but at least your photos won't look like they were drawn by a 5 year old with cataracts.

Yes but you can get a decent digital camera for less than £100 ... we bought a Olympus X-42 from Argos for £70 .... it takes excellent photos .... I am sure that if we wanted to blow them up to A3 size they might not look as good .... but for what my wife was looking for it is excellent value ...

The nearest Canon was £120-£140 .... to much.
