Aye they are expensive, and if we wanted a smaller do I'd have loved to go to abroad, but we'd miss out on so many of our friends and family being there as it would be too much of a strain for them to afford it, so we'd rather have it here and have an amazing, but very big day.

Just got my payslip, got backdated pay of £85 ish, which is good as I have £920 in the ISA so between the two thats my deposit for the wedding covered.

We were lucky cos we got married just before the recession so everyone was flush at the time. We brought all our nearest and dearest (56 people) and out of all the people we invited there was only one person that couldn't go. And that was because he was working illegally in the US and wouldn't have been able to go to the wedding no matter where it was.

We actually had 5 people come from Australia and 1 from the US for our big day. That meant a lot to us as it is a huge distance to travel :)

I can understand why people are a bit more strapped for cash now though. Saying that, I am just back from my friends wedding in southern Spain. 90 people came over for that wedding and it was brill!

I didn't want anymore than the number we had though, as I wanted an intimate wedding, where I got to spend quality time with each and every guest. It was lovely :)

Wow, things are expensive! Please tell me to butt out if you don't want to talk figures but am I right in thinking your wedding is going to be £6700 then Dinah? Any chance people could give me an idea of their costings please as I'm trying to figure out some kind of budget to work towards right now and from Nepal that's not so easy. I'm hoping this is on topic right, as part of the thread is about saving for your wedding? Thanks!

Thanks clearmydebts, looks like a good place to be! I have a longterm loan from my parents of 20k  - ouch, hurts even to write that! - for a house deposit which I desperately want to start paying off and will do as soon as I get back to the UK, so maybe I could join you from then if you're still going. Looks like you're doing a great job with yours :T

Yep the actual wedding reception venue is costing us £6700 Bails. Thats for 88 people to have a 3 course meal and drinks, and a total of 182 heads for an evening buffet (inviting 215 but only have to cater for 85% at our place). The cheapest place we have seen was going to be £4800 for the same thing but we wanted to go with somewhere we really loved, after all you only do it once I don't want to regret holding back on the big day.

If you want to do some rough sums the cheapest we found was £40 3 course meal, £16 drinks package, £6.95 evening buffet (but most were in the £12.95-£14.95 region). We have no room hire as we're a large wedding and they'll make enough off of us anyway, but many places have room hire for Friday, Saturday or Sunday weddings, our parties of less than 55/120ish which is a fairly standard £500 or £750 for room hire.

  • Thanks Bails - yeah it feels like things have turned a corner for me, debt-wise now. It will be a bit slower from now on, as I have a baby to save for too but want to make sure they have the best start in life and don't want to be scrimping and saving when they arrive!

You should defo join when you come back, we have been going for a year so don't think we will be giving up on the thread anytime soon!

One dooyoo down for the day. Only another 3/5 to go.... If I can do 3 today and 3 tomorrow on NIMs account he'll be at cashout level again which would be grand. My account is still 11,000 points off.

I think you should defo go for the wedding you want Dinah. It is a very important day and you want to have memories that you will cherish forever.

Everytime I look at my wedding album I smile and that's what you want :)

    Morning all,

Well I am not in the mood this morning. Bent down to pick something up and my back went yesterday. Luckily it got better as the day went on. Went to bed last night and I wanted to get up for a drink at 5am and I couldn't move. Had to wake OH to get the phone to ring NHS Direct to get some advise.

Managed to phone the doctors this morning once I had crawled to the phone and got a prescription for co-codomal (whoOO!). Money saving is on the back (sorry about the pun) burner today till it pulls itself round.
