Wow! Its certainly been busy on here today!
Dinah im very impressed at how many dooyoo reviews you have managed to get done. OH is going to work in a bit so maybe that will give me some time to get on with some more this evening.
Got called into work today, wasnt supposed to be in but its more money so thats good for me!
Oh and got some money back from a 'friend' that i lent to him well over a year ago - didnt think i was ever going to see that again!Biggest Loser Weight Loss: 13 / 20 lb0 -
I am so upset and angry and want someone with a clear head to give me some advice.
Basically we were moving to a 2 bed flat in June (renting). 2 of our friends approached us and asked us if we would sub-let a room to them for 12 weeks as my OH had no job and they were between flats. We agreed and it was all grand.
My OH got a job and we have to relocate. We were locked into an 8 month contract (with 4 months remaining) so we asked them if they wanted to stay for the rest of the contract and we would give them £250 per month towards the rent, so £1000 in total. I thought we were being very generous. We also said that we would keep the deposit (£900) in a holding account as they don't have much money.
We gave them a cheque for the amount and now they have approached us and said that we owe them about 14 days rent (approx £240). It is true, as there is an overlap but we stupidly thought that as we were giving them £1000 they would overlook that and include it. Stupid us
Anyway I am fuming as I can't believe that we have given another couple £1000 for nothing, only for them to ask for another £240. OH wants to give it back to them as he is in a band with them and feels that it will sour things if we don't. We are also afraid that if we don't they will tell the landlord that we were sub-letting.
I have agreed that we can give them the money (approx £240) but I want my deposit back, as I don't trust them. I also don't want to go for a drink with them on Friday like we were meant to, as I can't stand the sight of them. OH thinks I am being petty asking for the deposit back. I don't think I am at all. I don't trust them. OH also thinks I should hold my head high and go for a drink with them on Fri night. I think why should I pretend that everything is alright.
Any advice would be appreciated. ThanksTotal (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

CMD,
Was anything in writing? If not get it in writing when you hand over the £240. I am sure they will sign anything to get the cash.0 -
Oh CMD that sounds like a nightmare. *hugs*
I probably won't be able to give you any good advice, but I will say that I would probably be doing exactly the same as you.
I would be scared about them telling the landlord too. What would happen if they did? Also, if you took your deposit back is there a chance that would make them tell the landlord? This would be my biggest worry I think, rather than the money.
My OH would be doing the same as yours, and I think I would go to the pub, just to make things easier and not do anything to make them get you in trouble. But I would be fuming!
Is there any way you can talk to them and explain that you thought that because you were giving them £1000 that they would overlook the £240? You could suggest paying half that amount to help them out? (If you really have to)
Sorry I can't be more useful.. I'm sure the other girls (and boys!) will be able to help more. Hope you're ok thoughTotal Debt (Dec 2015) £11,500 : Currently £7,675Lose 21lb : 0/21

Thanks for replying Poolie. You are a sweetheart
I found this email I sent her which suggests £1000 towards rent starting from the next rental date. Think I will quote that to them;
Me and ......... feel that you have helped us by taking on the flat, so as we mentioned at the start we would like to pay £1000 towards your rent until Feb 22nd. That works out at £250 per month. Does that sound okay? I can give you the money this week via cheque so it is in your account for your first rent payment on the 22nd.
Re: deposit. As we said, we are happy to keep it there til Feb as it will be non-accessible savings towards the baby! We would need it back in February though, as I will be finishing up for maternity leave then
That just suggests £1000 and presumes that it includes the £240 as well (well on my part it does). I think that will throw weight to the argument. What do you think?Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

Do you have an email from them confirming they are happy with this arrangement if so then this is a type of contract as you have made the offer of £1000 and they have accepted.
Just a thought, had you actually paid the rent for the month in which these 14 days are. If so then they have no come back for the £240.
Can you provide dates of when rent due, when you moved out that sort of thing.0 -

That definitely sounds like it includes the £240 to me. If I received that email then I would presume it includes it. I think they are trying their luck and seeing if they can get a bit more money.Total Debt (Dec 2015) £11,500 : Currently £7,675Lose 21lb : 0/21

Yes, I have an email confirming that this arrangement.
My OH rang a friend and he says that we should owe them the £240 as it is due in rent and should also not ask for the deposit back at this stage, as it is spiteful.
So looks like they get there money and get to keep the deposit til Feb. I feel sick to my stomach and totally let down by my OHTotal (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

If they have confirmed that they are happy with the arrangement then in a court they would not have a leg to stand on.
It does sound like your OH is being a bit easy just because he plays in the band with them. Sorry but there are more than just 1 band in the world (how do you think Simon Cowell got so rich!)0 -
I think I might email her tomorrow and say how disappointed I feel about the whole thing and how I assumed (which is true) that the extra rent they paid was included in this, or else why would we have collected it from them?Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947
