Hi Dinah - something I can comment on knowledgeably (lol!). DD's just started going to a childminder and she charges £4 per hour. However, I have heard of other local childminders charging up to £8 an hour.....but I do live in a very affluent area where they must think they can get away with blue murder ;)

Thanks kittkins thats really helpful. I've been looking online recently and it seems I could do the qualification by distance learning for under £450 which seems very reasonable to me. I'm actually really excited about this prospect, I think I would find it so rewarding, and having a mum who is nationally recognised as a leader in early years education would give me a nice resource to call on. Shame I have to wait until I have children of my own to do it really!

    I like this one best!

Dinah - Do you have to have kids of your own to childmind? Didn't know that! Would be a great way for you to earn money while getting to stay at home with your kids.

I wouldn't have thought anyone would leave their kids with a childminder who hasn't got her own children in case she doesn't know what to do with them - could be wrong though I'm not sure?! Would definitely need my own house though! The more I think about it the more I'd like to do this, one of my friends mums was a childminder for many, many years, I might give her a ring ask her about it.

I just thought childminding was one of many things you could do after a child care course at college or whatever. Suppose it makes sense though!

Martin really needs to delete the MSE game, I've wasted almost a full afternoon on it!
  • I don't think you have to have kids of your own - my cousin who I don't know very well does it and she doesn't have kids. Don't know whether she's registered or whether it's a favour-type-thing though so that might make a difference.

Getting registered is really easy, its wheather anyone would choose to use me that I question! Have made a long list of qualifications the childminders in my area seem to have, will need to get a couple so thats a plan for next year.

Sounds like it will be perfect for you Dinah - I mean spending the day fingerpainting and getting paid for it?! I'd be sold too!

Starting to think I'm not going to meet my savings target :( working it out I'm going to be £40 short! I was counting on the money OH is giving me on his payday to meet (and smugly go over) the target, but it's just clicked he doesn't get paid until the last day of the month so there's no way the money will be in my bank account until the week after. Pain!

ETA: Although looking at my savings account I still would have saved £347.57! (£90 is money my sister owes me) which is pretty dandy to say I earnt £590ish this month.

Aye definitely not bad going Cinny. Does his bank not do faster payments? Always seems stupid to me it takes longer to transfer electronically than go into town, physically draw out the cash, take it over the road and hand it into your bank!
